Since people still can’t wrap their minds around the fact the Gaza death toll hasn’t changed
I'm an L5 working in EU and I recently got an offer of moving to Seattle on L1 visa. I eventually want to move to India and FIRE ASAP. Looking at average seattle salaries the TC will be around 260k. Is it a good idea to grind (or the S word) for 2-3 years in US or just stay here? Looking for responses from someone who has done a similar thing before. TC: 130k NW: 700k #amazon #l1 #fire #india #software #swe
Your NW is great for someone who works in the EU. How long have you been working there to save 700k?
Depending on where you are, 130k buys you a better lifestyle than 260 in Seattle imo. 130k in Berlin puts you in the absolute upper crust of earners among real interesting people. 260k in Seattle makes you a peasant in a sea of absolute rich, anti social tech bugs.
@yoozernaym I believe if OP is looking for staying abroad for at max next 3 years, then, a not so huge gap in terms of lifestyle between Europe and US is worth the bucks if op is going to spend remainder of life in India. Op will have to stay in Europe for twice the period to save the same amount as he would in US (considering taxes and income difference). Also, op has lived in EU, a factor to be taken into consideration. If op has kids, childcare is insanely expensive, then perhaps it is wiser to stay in EU.
Just because the salary is double (actually less due to currency) doesn’t mean you save double. Go grab dinner in Seattle and you’ll pay twice what you pay in Berlin. Hire a Plummer or an electrician. Rent an apartment. Everything costs way more plus you need to have a car and a health savings account etc. And even if it was double the savings, I guess you’d have a point if nothing more than money mattered to you. I spent 5 years in Europe when I could have been working in the US saving much more money, but in that time I became fluent in a new language, built a group of friends, traveled a lot, made good experiences. Wouldn’t trade it for any money.
What’s your target NW? Yoe? Why India over EU and US?
I'm targetting 10 crores (1.25 MM). India for being close to family and friends. But getting a German passport before moving back does seem tempting as well.
Keep your mind clear and don’t think about German passport etc as once you wander it’s easy to get stuck in a loop Age?
What is the current location? 130K in L5?
Lux or dublin probably
Yes do it . I too moved on an L1 and have now retired in India . Try to get Amazon to apply for an H1B after 1 year . You can then easily switch to a 400-500k job in the Bay Area .
I feel it is a no brainer if your ultimate goal is to FIRE in India ! Perhaps move to Seattle for those big bucks and return in 2-3 years. But usually you’ll end up staying here in a perpetual trap of chasing something (TC, H1B, GC and so on) which usually happens to most of the immigrants! Also, there are other factors involved to take the call, do you have a spouse, kids ?
Gc would be out of question for op
I have a dependent spouse but no kids yet (plan to).
