Am hearing people get snatched robbed kidnapped etc. Is this even real?? Ok if we go is Airbnb ok or must be a resort for safety?
Same in Oakland, CA or even parts of San Francisco. Why blame Mexico
This like the most laughable thing I’ve read. Crime happens in every city all the time- people get pick pocketed in popular US destinations like Orlando, NOLA, Chicago . Crime rates are higher in a lot of big US cities than most major Mexican cities. If you know how to plan and travel safely without making yourself a target Mexico is an incredible destination, coast to coast. Would I travel to Juarez or Matamoros for a bootleg cosmetic surgery? No. But plenty of Mexicos states aren’t even on the US travel advisory list.
How is Cabo San Lucas? We have kids and don’t party
Perfectly safe. It tends to be ranked in the safest destinations in Mexico. Enjoy a nice beach vacation (especially if you don’t plan to leave a resort too much), and feel free to get out and walk around to dinner and shopping. Just be smart about how and where you walk, what you bring with you, etc. Preplan excursions with reputable, highly rated guides, and enjoy the experience. We went last year and it was super clean, quiet, loads of security everywhere, and nicer than a lot of places we’ve visited for sure.
Cabo and Cancun are safe. Just be vigilant
I am from south Texas, don’t listen to these idiots. You’ll be fine if you stay on resort property for sure. However, when you go out be vigilant, don’t wear things to identify that you are American period. Don’t necessarily trust random Americans while in Mexico, as these tend to be people that also do the trafficking as opposed to Mexicans (resort cities are supposed to be neutral zones for cartel in theory, think like New York split up by five families). In general don’t party like you’re on spring break in college and do things through the resort as they are responsible for you. I wouldn’t be too scared but for the love of god don’t think it’s like safer than America whatsoever
Ok sounds good. We are not resort people though, never vacationed in one. Is booking through Airbnb safe?
I would strongly advise against staying in Airbnb
I’ve been in Oaxaca, MX for about 3 weeks. Protest are constant because of femicide but I haven’t heard anything about tourist specifically being snatched/robbed. But extortion, maybe…especially in places like Tulum or Cancun around the resorts. The police may try to jam you up but a few dollars would get you out of it.
Been to Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancun, Merida and crossed into Belize via bus. Didn’t experience anything unsafe. Just don’t show off too much wealth but that goes with any travel in general.
This is a legitimate question. I’ve traveled to different parts of Mexico several times over the years, including with a kid, and I loved every trip. Back then it was generally accepted that the popular tourist areas were mostly safe from serious, violent crimes because the government and locals did not want to jeopardize a lucrative tourist economy. However, a few years ago Mexico appeared on a prominent list of countries most in danger of becoming a failed state because the cartels were becoming more powerful than government forces. And the violent crimes and kidnappings began to spill over into the once safe tourist destinations. I’d love to hear from people with direct knowledge because Mexico is an incredible country and I’d love to go back, but I’m concerned tourists have become targets since security has deteriorated in recent years. And yes, I know crime gets hyped up in the media, but when I traveled there 10 years ago I wasn’t reading about machine gun battles and abductions on the streets of Cancun. Things seem to have changed enough that my moderate risk tolerance now gives me pause. I hope I’m wrong.
Mexico is super dangerous. If you go to any of the cities, be prepared to encounter the drug CARTELS. You know, like the stuff you see in Breaking Bad. One second you’re enjoying a pina colada the other you’re being forced to work in a lab. (Just trying to do my part to prevent overcrowding at my favorite spot)
Nonsense. Mexico is one of the the best place for honeymoon. Stop watching too many Netflix tv shows
Sure in a hotel behind the fence with security lol
largely depends on where you go and how you party from what i understand
How is Cabo San Lucas? We have kids and don’t party
Cabo may not be the right place for you then. Consider other places like Cancun, Mexico City
