Is it cool to request an iPhone at Facebook?

The equipment page in onboarding says, “please do not request an iPhone unless you have a business reason”. My business reason is that I really want an iPhone 8...

KPMG users_824 Dec 11, 2017

That sounds more like a personal reason

Facebook michaelwes Dec 11, 2017

If you're eligible for an upgrade, sure, request whatever you want. Otherwise please only request one if you have a business need. You're paid enough to buy one yourself if you don't meet those criteria. We trust people to make the right choices. That's one of the reasons we haven't had to become as "frugal" as some of the other companies yet. Please don't change that.

It looks like OP is asking about onboarding, so not related to our upgrade policy? Did we start aggressively steering people towards Android?

Amazon ushevrufkt OP Dec 11, 2017

Yeah the onboarding form *strongly* suggests an android phone. Guess I’ll go with it for now

Might be a bit hard since you work at Amazon, but sure. Give it a shot.

Onboarding implies new hire

I’m sure you know the stats about how many people access FB on Android vs. iPhone globally. Empathy is important. Personally I would never buy an android device which is why I chose one for work and keep a personal iPhone.

Intuit nilops Dec 11, 2017

Empathy with who? Try running some ads on Facebook to drive revenue to your ecommerce business...

Microsoft ITRB68 Dec 11, 2017

Do you go everywhere with two phones and two numbers then? I'm genuinely asking since I requested an Android and have a personal iPhone that I have no intention of giving up.

Never take a company phone. You can never know if they are snooping on you with some sneaky spyware that you can't remove

Facebook corgi4all Dec 11, 2017

Always assume that everything you do on a work device (phone, laptop, whatever) is monitored (worst case scenario). Use your work phone for work and personal phone for personal stuff.

Amazon ushevrufkt OP Dec 11, 2017

I can’t imagine how they would monitor anything on an iPhone tbh

Asking for iPhone is no big deal

Asking Jeff Frugal Bezos is the big deal.

Amazon Benny Lava Dec 11, 2017

Business reason means testing for compatibility, that's it. What's next? Requesting only white iPhone for business reason?

Microsoft Wk1207 Dec 11, 2017

Ask your recruiter

Facebook veronica& Dec 11, 2017

I’m sure your manager won’t care - won’t affect your reviews or anything

Facebook ixUY64 Dec 11, 2017

Just ask for an iPhone if you want one, nobody cares.
