Is it okay to refer your spouse for a role within your company?

Would it work against your spouse's application if you refer them to the hiring manager directly? Considering the spouse will be targeting a different job role than yours and not in the same reporting chain. #referral #spouse #workplace #ethics

Of course. Why not?

Microsoft eyrebe OP May 9, 2021

Not sure but I think it could be considered a conflict of interest? Also nepotism?

Google stonkey May 9, 2021

Conflict of whose interest? No way. Spousal referral are common and valued at Google

Why not? My spouse worked at Microsoft and referred me to some jobs there before I joined Uber. Didn’t hear one thing on the referrals from a recruiter so I doubt it makes much difference compared to applying online

I know referrals at MS don't work. However, contacting the HM should work.

It works. I recently helped 8 guys to get first interview at least. Need to play game carefully.

Yeah absolutely !!!

It’s fine, but would never recommend both partners work at the same company if possible. If shit hits the fan, then your both at risk. Better to diversify.

What do you think about MSFT + Amazon duo?

Amazon qaz1wsx2 May 10, 2021

Much safer. I mean, I wouldn’t expect one to change sectors to further diversify, you aren’t stocks, you are humans with skills! But, staying away from the same company is wise. My husband is in a completely different sector from me, but would be an amazing operations manager for Amazon. We both felt that was a bad choice. While I doubt Amazon will fall anytime soon, no company is too big too fail.

Salesforce Gwds12 May 9, 2021

Yes, but do let HR know (in writing) to avoid any conflict of interest.

Amazon jeezos May 10, 2021

There is no conflict of interest here. Referrals to family/friends are allowed by all companies. Just make sure you stay away from their interview process. Poking your nose in the interview process OR trying to find/manipulate/force the interview results could be considered conflict of interest.
