textbook nepotism Hypothetical example: my child is graduating college soon, could you hook them up with a job at netflix? (Or whatever company) -> hired without going through regular recruiting process/interviews at all.
I’ve seen a Partner Dev Director instruct his reports to go easy on a candidate as he’s worked with him before. Not sure if nepotism but dude def had an advantage over other candidates and job was his before his interview already
If i was interviewer, I'd give strong hire unless dude was a total idiot
Nah dude was capable. And I’m sure with enough prep he would’ve aced any question. But it’s bullshit that he was given easier questions than others imo. All applicants should get a fair shot.
Haven’t seen or heard about anything like that in Amazon, but why would anyone want to go by connections to Amazon after all…
I don’t think so. But still happens at boomer companies
Not for devs but for L8+ it is all about connections. You don’t just submit your resume. You usually are approached by the company and there is always someone that knows the person and has some kind of connections. Even for L6+ roles internal company referrals/recommendations are important and can make one application level easier. As at that level leadership is more important. For L5 and lower it is mostly about interview performance. I have seen people with connections getting a leg up by knowing well the type of interview they will be getting and getting tips on how the internal candidate review thinking works. Think of it as more advanced prep. As for second and third tier companies, I have seen people get hired just because connections. Eg. Getting hired as test dev, then promoted to engineer yet they didn’t know to code much. There no one ethnicity that comes to mind on this, but it is always some kind of ‘ethnic relation’ type of nepotism in these cases. This is hard to pull off in FAANGMULA size of companies as there tend to be multiple checks to prevent this kind of behavior.
I would say that being well connected in the industry for L8+ management is rather job requirement and not nepotism which OP describing.
Pure nepotism at the top tech companies, especially if executed clumsily (paper trail , other candidates got wind of the favoritism and could potentially sue) is grounds for reporting as unethical behavior by whistleblowers.
For big tech you can always help give someone an advantage. However, just slipping someone in through the back door is tough given the checks and balances.
Sheryl Sandberg has entered the chat
She got her kid a job at Meta?
She got herself a job through (((connections)))
I've definitely seen it. Worked for a startup that employed the kid of a Tech Titan. They got a funding round from the Dad and took on the kid. He did do some work but definitely not at the level of pressure and scrutiny that others faced. Stayed 2 years and left for mba. They mentioned it nonstop to anyone who would listen, including during interviews, that that kid had "chosen" their startup to work at. Lmao. Money buys a lot.
If they were qualified enough to not get pipped and fired from the company, they'd get the job themselves
No. Interviews are a crapshoot.
