I noticed some job postings that would be a good fit. I have a connection already and have gone through the product interviews once before and was considered an edge case. I think with more prep and the increased experience I could do better. But I’m concerned that google isn’t done firing people. Any thoughts? I’m just curious because they’re clearly posting jobs even while layoffs are happening. Btw, I like my job a lot. It’s just not the best pay: $167 base $25k bonus 3k options
Why do you want to work here?
Applying has zero risk - it’s when you get an offer when you have to make a choice
If you reject the offer, can you apply a similar opening at the same team in 2-3 years again? Will they consider you?
Your offer is valid only for a year.
Once a company does layoffs there's always going to be a future risk of layoffs. I would think about whether you would take it even with the risk of layoffs. Is the (even short term) experience worth it to you? Is the money important to you? What do you want to do with your career long term? Some people find their career stagnates at Google. It isn't easy to get promoted and sometimes people do stupid stuff with their time to get promoted and don't even enjoy it. Basically what I'm saying is you probably need to think about more aspects of this decision.
FANG is full of toxic culture. If you are satisfied with your current role, don't go into the wilderness of the employer driven market.
This is not an employer driven market. 2009-2010… now THAT was employer driven.
Go for it. Invest some time in interview preparation. It won't hurt. If not G and your prep will help you with other companies, given the market no harm in being ready for the worst.
There are very very few roles and the vast majority are getting filled by internal candidates. You mentioned in a previous comment that it's a large investment. If you manage to get an offer in this hiring climate with all the required approvals, I think the odds of a layoff hitting that role are very very small because it's essentially been deemed a critical position. I think it's far more likely that if you pass the interview that you get stuck in team match for 9-12 months without an offer before your interview results expire. If you are willing to risk that then go for it. Or if you have niche expertise and see an opening directly matching that go for it as well. If you're going to be a generalist PM especially below level 6, your odds are very low even with amazing interview results.
This is what I experienced. Had positive feedback in the past and can’t even get an interview right now — a perfect role was posted last week, I applied through a referral and it disappeared altogether, then got a denial. I assume they only posted for legal purposes and hired an internal candidate they already had in mind.
What happens when your interview results expire?
will you be shot if you apply?
You may not even be selected for the screening call, why are you 100 steps ahead?
Yo homeboy!! Did you join Google from Amazon?
Nope. The job police will come and arrest you if you apply. Plus layoffs could happen at any time. I mean, not that they couldn’t happen at any time literal anywhere. But they could also happen at Google. Better to play it safe and never step outside of your comfort zone.
Get an offer first.
It’s a big time investment to go through that entire process. Im trying to figure out if that risk is even worth it
Then don't
