Is it standard to have EM lead all scrum ceremonies instead of scrum master?

I recently joined a new team as an EM and we don't seem to have a scrum master. They expect EM to lead all sprint ceremonies which feels odd atleast for the retro. How do other places do it? Should I ask for an SM?

Ideally, you should not. ICs should feel free to object and say no to SM but when EM is the SM things get little weird.

Don't do scrum master, make it a rotation

The team doesn't seem to be interested in that and find it weird when I suggested it

So don’t ask them for permission, just have them start doing it.

It’s common, but a bad practice.

Thanks for affirming my thought

Why is it a bad practice?

It is part of your role to gently push the team to try processes that they aren’t comfortable with right now but will ultimately be better for the customers/product and the team. You should gradually introduce a rotation of scrum master role, perhaps after you lead the first by setting an example.

EM is perfectly fine as scrum master in my experience. After all, scrum master is asking everyone their daily progress, and EM is the best person to ask these questions and anything else from the team.

Don't use agile

It is not what is recommended by scrum, but if it’s working for the team then it’s fine. I have never seen EM be scrum master usually it’s tech lead or an IC
