I am a product manager in cloud. Today my manager told me that unless I can turn around the IBM cloud business, I won't get a promotion (I am not a manager and am not asking to be promoted to one) I think it's time for me to leave. Is it too late to leave IBM? Will other companies decline my application because I work for IBM?
What is IBM?
they helped Hitler in wwii. more recently they wrote a decent Jeopardy bot. just kidding op, it's definitely not too late to leave. don't throw good money after bad.
ohhh they are the ad agency behind watson!
IBM is still respected in some places. Where are you based?
I am in Austin but moving to SF soon.
There is absolutely no problem moving. The stigma at being from a particular company does not Trump your skills or attitude. Look to move to companies like Amazon where they are hiring like crazy. I know tons of people there who come to Product Management from companies like Infosys or TCS with close to zero relevant experience. Amazon's bar is very very low right now.
This is really encouraging. I will start looking and prepare for interviews. The last time I did an interview was two years ago. Will definitely need some practice.
All the best! You can do it.
turn an entire vertical around where companies larger than yours are dominating? unless you're a super high IC, this is either your managers or directors work and they can't figure it out.
Agreed. The manager sounds like an incompetent POS.
I think what my manager was trying to say is that the whole company is not doing well so nobody (or only a few) can get promoted. That I understand but I still can't accept. :(
Get out asap! Too many incompetent middle level managers not doing anything but pointing fingers. Even Warren buffet bailed. IBM brand is still OK for my job search. I got quite a few offers. I'll have on-sites with Google and Facebook soon. I save the best for last. Really really hope I'll get offer from those two.
Good luck! Glad to hear this good news. That really makes me feel a bit better. Will start to send out resumes and ask for referral.
Thank you! Good luck to you too!
Op, how many years of experience you have
2 years at IBM, 5 years prior to IBM.
Prepare well and apply and you will get it.
Oh good, you've only been there for 2 years, not 20. Definitely start putting your feelers out there.
No
It is at least a decade late
