Is it worth going the extra mile for $15,000 in Amex stock annually?

If you get at least Goals 2 and Leadership 1 at Amex you get $15,000 in Amex stock that vests after 3 years. You have to go above and beyond at work to get this rating. I got 2 1 this year so I got the stock but not sure if it’s worth it every year. TC with $15k stock: $185k Base: $135k Bonus: $35k Stock: $15k

Not exactly easy in this job market for PMs

Think of it this way. If you found a job that paid you 15k more per year, and you decided to spend all of that money on Amex stock, you’d be in the same position

I would not spend that money on Amex stock

Just sell it on vest.

Unless you have something better to do, then why not. Something better - taking care of children, dating, trips to cool places, health (gym, cooking healthier food), improving interviewing skills, etc. Not something better - TV, video games, social media

The way I look at it, you should first evaluate your approach to your work. If you find meaning in it on its own merits, then you are probably engaged in the work anyway and could get the extra stock without too much extra effort. If that is the case, I’d go for it. If it is just a job or you are just there for the paycheck but don’t really care about the work, then you probably really need to force yourself out of your comfort zone to get the rating. If that is the case, then I’d say think long and hard about how important that extra cash is to you and what other alternative options there would be to get it. Only put in the work if you want that extra cash and working harder at your job is the easiest way to get it. Also noteworthy to figure into your calculus: if you are going above and beyond for the bonus, you probably also are fast tracking yourself for promotions, so the rewards may be larger than just the bonus in the long run.

100% vest after 3 years??

do engineers get stock?

Break that down to how much time does it equate to, and add a $value. You can probably make more by doing side jobs.

It’s a simple calc really. How many hours per year do you work now. Take total comp and divide by hours. Next, how many hours to get the G2,L1? Take total comp plus 15k and divide by new hours. Note this is giving the assumption that you can stay around long enough to actually vest. Chances are you will see it pays to be at the lower performance level. If you want to make 15k more per year then go drive an Uber on the weekend.
