Is it worth joining eBay over Amazon ?
I want work life balance, kinda burnt off at the moment. Amazon L5 325k Seattle eBay MTS1 350k Bay Area I am worried about tax in Bay Area but I hate weather in Seattle. Amazon offer from S3 org, the team doesn’t have on call currently but will in 2023. The team is working on a feature that’s extra added on to S3 (by paying more money) so on call will only be from 9-5. eBay team is security and identity, need to go to office 2ce a week. The team and manager seem nice. (Initially they offered remote but later on the manager spoke to director and they decided in office is best, this worries me, that they were not honest on their word.) My initial decision was to join eBay when they had offered remote. But now that it’s in office I don’t know what to do. Amazon promised remote but that can change in future. Plus all the horror stories in Amazon scare me. #Amazon #eBay Current TC: 400k YOE: 7 Not in Compass anymore.

OP - consider making a pro and con list, since you apprear conflicted and do not have any strong preference. Like which work interests you more - security or AWS/storage? Are you willing to move? Are you willing to take a further pay cut for high taxes in CA (enough to pay for 'good' weather)? Are you comfortable with growth prospects of eBay vs Amazon (from publicly available information)? Both eBay and Amazon may offer work-life balance, but generally Amazon work life is more intense (when you are working), but growth is also high in my experience. But it is not for everyone. If I were you, I would have joined Amazon since then I do not need to relocate, there is no on-call in next few months which gives me ramp up time, and CA taxes are high and weather is not as good as it is advertised (I relocated to CA last year). But I do not know your circumstances, so it is hard to give objective opinion. But hope above questions help you decide. Good luck!
Also - it is public info that eBay recently changed their WFH and office return policy. Don't think you were intentionally mislead.
Thank you so much for the above comment. Honestly I am very confused because of what happened in my current company. (They put me on pip in 3 months and this was mainly due to office politics) The remote thing was mainly because of manager in eBay. First he says take remote and then when I agree to join he goes and discusses with director and he says no. So he had to go back on his words. In all honesty I am in no mood to work hard anymore, I want to rest for a few years focus on my mental health. From that prospective eBay and pay cut seems like an ok option. Maybe I’ll have more clarity when Amazon comes back with their final offer (still negotiating with them)
eBay work environment is on point! 2 days at work won't be a problem, there's always something fun at work. And you'd get a lot more freebies literally daily than just 🍌. Just saying....
