I’ve been at IBM for 2 years now doing security work but want to transition into a dev/technical role so I’m getting my master in comp sci (AI/ML). IBM is willing to pay for all of it (~50k total) with the caveat being I have to stay for 2 years after completing. Since IBM is pretty huge I can move around internally and learn new skills but the best way to grow your career is to move around. I also have an on-site Amazon SysDevEng role coming up soon and though I might be able to pay out of pocket if I work there (estimating a base of ~$125k) not sure if the WLB there will allow much time for grad school. You're better off hopping and using the sign-on to pay for your masters...
There are also a lot of other companies that will pay or partially pay (I think adobe pays around 10k per year or term and will cover your last term tuition before joining)
50k/6 is 🥜
You could literally take the next two years off from work, pay for your MSCS out of pocket, and end up in a better financial position 6 years from now than you would be with this plan.
If you do accept and finish your masters degree, you can immediately apply to other companies without staying for the last two years. Just tell them to cover the penalty with a signing bonus, most good companies will accept since the amount is so small compared to your yearly TC at that point.
That’s something I never considered, thanks.
Just keep ibm job and pay out of pocket while at ibm (low workload, i presume) and then after completing masters jump and get back the masters amount just in signing bonus.
You can get 50k in yr 1 sign on, much higher base, an rsu package, and then a yr 2 sign on. Dm me if you want advice on zon jobs.
Thanks, will DM now.
50k is not worth being trapped for 2 years missing out on 100s of thousands
I’m thinking you might be right, was just concerned about going somewhere and working 80 hours a week and having no time for the masters
However if you like your job and aren’t going to leave then do it
