Recruiter kept pushing me for a target salary I had in mind. So I upped the target by around 25-30% for the base. I feel weird about how much she pushed me for it, so I gave it anyways because I know for a fact that the initial number is always a lowball. Was it a mistake? This was communicated through emails and not verbally, I have a couple more interview rounds including the technical interview. TC: 120
Recruiters in California can’t legally ask you what your previous salary was. This is a tactic to lowball you. Just tell them to make you a competitive market rate offer given your years of experience and you’ll go from there.
You should have just shut her out. Sometimes people have hard time denying ladies. May be you suffered from it. I usually tell this if they push really hard - "its one of those things that i follow and want to stick to it. I let the companies assess my skills and compensation. I would prefer this to stay as is".
Believe me, I declined in the call, declined in the couple email communications until she kept asking for a target to work with. It was out of sheer awkwardness that I threw out the number
Target's perfectly fine. Just give them a target that if you see it on paper, you'll accept. This is your upper limit on negotiations. It'll be hard to go over your target unless you have a different offer.
Depends when they ask for a TC target. If you are about to get an offer for a role based on a successful interview I refuse to give a number. At that point the company knows the role you are going into and they have an estimation of your experience as it fits in that role. They should just present an offer from their pay band. I would only give a number here if you are pretty confident you know the appropriate pay range. But it's too easy to low ball yourself most of the time. Because the company has way more recent pay data than you.... If they are asking much earlier to help filter out appropriate roles to go after, giving a number makes sense.
