Tell me if reading blind just has pickled my brain or if I shouldn’t take a job at google right out of college. Reading these posts makes it seem like you never get promoted, never work, and don’t get paid as much as other places. Is this just blind propaganda or is this actually how it is? Would it be a career mistake to join right out of school?
What are your priorities? Do you have other options? For people earlier in their career I usually recommend faster growth companies such as Meta. But it’s still a solid choice and you won’t have any trouble getting interviews after a year or two if you decide you want to try something new.
Blind has rotted your brain
If you are talented and have some luck, you can progress relatively quickly. Most of my friends made L3 -> L5 in 4 years or less and some made to L6 in 6 years. (Classmates from top school). About money, once you are L5 if you want to stay at google, you can try for retention offers. Or you can just leave for senior at other places and get top offers around 500k. Don’t worry about money in your early years. Instead prioritize learning and getting to senior/staff quickly.
How much luck is involved? If you’re talented and work hard can you create more opportunities for yourself?
Even if you work hard, a lot of luck is involved. I believe the median is 6 years for L3 -> L5.
Did you think about this before posting? Stop listening to random people on the internet. These are just opinions.
They do think about this stuff - I think new grads and interns just want people to blow smoke up their ass. I refuse to believe an educated person actually takes blanket statements on entire companies, full of 125k workers globally seriously. Reddit cscareerquestions and csmajors has the same problem. Dumb posts like these shrouded as “hur dur, i got into prestigious company!! Am i making the wrong choice?? Will this ruin my life??”
What blind app have you been using?
This one! I’ve seen so many google haters come out of the woodwork recently. Specifically in the context of early career roles.
Not sure why, personally I haven’t seen early career haters, mostly mid/senior career, which is fine. If anything it’s better early career since there’s no risk of being offered a down level. Most people hating because they get offered a down level which means less TC and no promo. In general, TC is great, WLB is good, and you have a top company on your resume. Take it if you have an offer imo
What blue said. Google is notorious for downleveling but you're not being downleveled as a new grad. Perfect time to join. I turned down G L3 offer when I had nearly 5 yoe in non-prestigious companies and took AWS L5 instead. At the same time a friend from my same old company took the G L3 offer. Less than two years later I had FB E5 and equivalent offers for $400k+ and my friend was "one or two cycles away" from L4 still at G making <$200k. Basically his first 5 years meant nothing.
I shit on Google a lot, but I think there are 2 great times in your career to join: 1. New grad: avoid downleveling, get great resume branding, even with slow median promo time you'll be L5 by 5 YOE on median. You can leave after like 1-2 years for a pay raise if you get bored or it's too slow. 2. Terminal level: basically just never expect a promo and spend 4 hours in cafe
Don’t listen to people on here, it’s a great opportunity. You can always leave if you don’t like it and having it on your resume will make going elsewhere easier
Right out of college and getting a crap ton of money and a top tier employer on you resume is a dream. Don't listen to blind trolls. If you don't like it, you can always leave later.

How big are the balls of Google to lay off thousands and then do 70 BILLION in stock buyback?
No, it would not be a career mistake to join Google as a new grad. Wtf is blind doing to peoples brains????
Idk I figured logically this is the case but I see posts all the time being like ‘why would you ever work at google when you could go to meta and make fat stacks and get promoted???’
a lot of people here are brainwashed elitists. Google would be an awesome place to work out of college. Are there better offers and career choices in terms of career growth and pay? Probably. But is Google bad? No, not even close.
