Does cardio help for weight loss ?
Would you leave an SDE2 position at faang for a phD at a top school?
If I got into MIT in Math for a PhD yes. That shit is so hard and the exit opportunity’s are immense if you’re looking for more leadership roles.
What kind of leadership roles?
Consulting firms would gobble you up, jpmc would probably like you in their trading division if you’re interested in that, if you wanna go down the more interesting route research institutes worldwide would love a mit PhD grad, any company working with algorithms would like you. There’s sooooo many places that would want you specifically of the MIT on your resume.
Yes if you want to go into research or become a professor
I dont want to go into research or academia
Then don't go
Follow your heart
How do you get math PhD offer from MIT?
You apply
I mean could you share a little on your background and tips for application? Many people will be interested in getting that instead of working a 9-5 corporate job :)
Worth it is a tough question to ask. If you mean financially ? Then no. If you look to see what new grads out of mit are getting with phds you’ll see the range goes from 120-210k. If you’re making over 250k the 4 years of phd is 1mil loss (if you’re not investing) to then go and make the same amount after school. Is saying you have a PhD from MIT worth +1 million dolllars for you? Once in a lifetime opportunity for a lifetime worth of money. Very very tough situation. It gets tougher if you start thinking about if you want to enjoy your unmarried life while you still can , do you want to travel, etc. and if MIT doesn’t stack up to your expectations then you might feel bitter about it tbh. I’d start with writing down what are your expectations in the experience, like day to day life, and expectations after graduation. That’s all I got. Just shit to think about.
Yes, with that degree You can easily target a job anywhere , FAANG, university faculty openings.
Yes. 300000% Just make sure your PhD is related to what you will work on in industry.
We literally do not hire anyone in anything serious unless their PhD is in that field.
"worth it" for the experience if you want to do research in math. It's the best place in the world to learn and research as much as you want in math. You won't get any better opportunities in life. Now financially? No. But life isn't all about just money. Both careers will leave you in the upper middle class lifestyle. You can NEVER buy your way into a PhD for math at MIT. No amount of millions can buy that experience. Literally "invaluable" life experience that only select few can experience. But you can always work as an engineer at any time with even a few days of prep. I would do it. Give it a shot. You only live life once and math is really fun/interesting. If you do something quite applied to the real world, well who knows. Or maybe you might get a job as a quant if you want to sell yourself to the industry afterwards. Math PhD from MIT can get you anywhere. It's a golden ticket to opportunities in life. No one will question you in the sciences. You can work in academia, research, and/or industry anywhere in the world.
