Signed an offer to join Nvidia in Jan. Is it a good idea to join Nvidia in this scenario? The company has had multiple headwinds this year with China ban, etc. Worried there will be layoffs soon. (I am on a visa - so layoffs will be extra stressful) #nvidia TC - 220k
What role, can you share?
DL software
Developer? Program manager?
Nvidia is kind of company that will never die
Nvidia won’t die, but if stock goes down further, they ll have to do something to appease Wall st. Slightly worried about that.
Almost every company is doing that now after Twitter. It's same risk everywhere
Don’t join nVidia unless you know the manager and the team really well. In particular avoid Autonomous Vehicles related products and related frameworks groups like compilers both hw and sw. The WLB is terrible. Team scattered In many timezones will keep you up late nights and then awake you early morning. With stock not so good, pay is no longer good. And the quality of infrastructure and production code is really surprisingly bad. Bases on good reviews and Blind impressions it seemed like a good choice but it’s not worth it, especially if you are in SW.
Really? I thought their AV division rocks! What is the risk there?
Me too. Not anymore. The industry for AV is not really looking promising. Not at least for next 3-5 years.
Nvidia doesn’t lay-off. CEO cares about employees and would do everything possible to cut costs before laying off. Nvidia stocks are volatile and that’s nothing new. The company doesn’t make long term decisions based on short term stock fluctuations. So if you’re worried about job security, it’s the safest place to be.
Everything is risky now so don’t worry
Amazon, why would you join NVIDIA? I assume you are being hired for a software position. Most SW in NV is system software, which basically means embedded garbage code that you cannot possibly debug and contributing to it would make your life miserable. Most people here want out of that. As others have stated stay away from Autonomous Vehicles and related teams. Unless, you already have an understanding of what work exactly you are going to do, I would suggest staying as far as possible.
100% agreed.
Didn’t think of this. Was getting a pretty sweet bump in TC (~60k higher) so signed the offer.
Doing anything is risky now. Do whatever you won’t regret not doing
I estimate 40-60% rev drop and similar numbers for NVDA along with all in semicon to be laid off by 2026
That’s a serious number to pull out of one’s ass.
Hahahaha but it might happen. You never know for sure. 🤦🏻♂️
Is Amazon somehow layoff proof? No one knows the future, but you know that you are getting $60K TC bump now. Imagine not taking it and then getting laid off from Amazon.
Valid point
Is Yes a reply to your question, is it a good time to join Nvidia? If so then the associated comment ‘Moving is risky’ is contradictory.
I realised it as soon I posted. Couldn’t edit the poll. Will edit the post probably
It's still contradictory I voted yes because I read the description - is it a good time to join? This contradicts the title - is it risky? Poll results will not give the right info, but poll results in blind is always meh
