I got onsites coming up with React pair programming round. I’m very rusty and wonder if preparing it is actually worth it. How common is frontend interviews for SWE or full stack engineers?
I recently interviewed for several front end positions and all of them had a react portion that was fairly involved. I wouldn’t say you need to study much, but make sure you are good at dealing with refs and be able to implement code to detect when someone has clicked outside a particular element , that seems to be a common one.
Shit I have to Google what is ref … I think I’m fucked
😆
Plaid doesnt ask questions where you’ll use react per se.
Thx !
Just pure leetcode style question and system design ?
I’ve had stuff range from direct react questions ( use hooks API and make a component that does X) to made up frontend language/ code base and I had to make changes to the code with the interviewer
Were you interviewing a frontend position or full stack ?
Yeah but I think they were full stack / front end leaning type of roles not exactly typical
I've given a few interviews recently and Salesforce was the only one that asked me to write front end code, I did not enjoy their interview format, honestly unless you want to work as a front end developer, I think it's not worth joining any company that puts so much focus on front end. Most good companies just ask LeetCode style questions, behavioral questions, object oriented questions and low or high level design and practicing those would be a better investment. Some companies also ask you the specifics of the technologies they use like JavaScript, react, Java etc. I find this a red flag and any company that expects you to memorize some specifics of a language or a framework is usually not worth joining.
Big companies should not ask ppl to write any frontend code that revolves around a framework. It makes more sense for startups because they need to move fast and it helps with ramp up if you’re familiar with their tech stack. Vanilla Javascript and barrage of frontend concept tests are more common. It would be more fair if they provide a compilable environment if asking for React code. Clarify with your recruiter beforehand, they should tell you if you should focus on general SWE prep or frontend specific prep. Since you mention it’s a React pair programming, you should brush up on it for this particular interview
It’s common to ask FE domain knowledge in the full stack interviews. I encountered from Apple, Robinhood, Doordash, PayPal. Sometimes they allow you to use alternative frameworks to React
Is Angular allowed lol
Anything really.
I was asked to re-implement promises once. Did not see that happening and LeetCode grinding was no help. Needless to say, I embarrassed myself bc I fumbled.
Depends on the company. It’ll be embarrassing if you fumble on making a custom hook for example.
I’m very rusty with frontend. I’m mainly backend but this position is full stack.
