I invested some money in tesla and I'm currently slightly down in it. I'm considering selling my position on the dead cat bounce, but I'm not sure. I am curious from people either working at Tesla or people with some expertise in AI, is tesla really an AI company? I don't really believe the youtuber fanboys that say it's an AI, energy and robotics company. I'm very bullish on AI in general. If tesla is an AI company, how does it fare against NVDA, microsoft, google with respect to AI capabilities? Didn't they just switch to using neural network for their FSD just last year? I was shocked to hear this. I thought they would be using nueral networks for at least 3-4 years by now. That doesn't seem like they have any kind of lead in AI.
They are "AI" in the sense that build and invest money on supercomputers for machine learning, which they use to speedup training of the models they use for their self-driving and warehouse robots. They're not building LLMs or anything similar to chatGPT but it's still machine learning, just not the trendy one.It sincerely sounds like you are non technical about machine learning I would advise you to stop putting money on anything that says AI, because this word in and of itself means nothing.
That's why I'm asking the technical folks about their opinion on tesla's ai
That's fair but I really suggest you to not take anything that says AI or Quantum etc at face value, and products aren't good by virtue of being powered by AI. AI has many risks which make some of the products unusable, they're never 100% robust so they are unusable for security critical tasks, they are not explainable, they're compute intensive and very expensive to train, require a lot of data which is also expensive to obtain and store. For instance so far in the world of robotics in which I currently work, the industry leaders and even new startups are wary of directly implementing AI and prefer classical computer vision techniques and task specific algorithms which are known to be robust and are explainable in case something breaks down.
They are not an AI company and it's obvious. They are a car company. People say they're an AI company as cope to justify their crazy market cap compared to peers.
Don’t listen to naysayers and the crowd that’s says others are catching up. By the time they catch up to current Tesla, Tesla would have gone 5 steps ahead of where it is today. They are doing some groundbreaking stuff with vision based self driving which is not easy at all. Their drive units and manufacturing is much ahead of competitors. They are the leader in EV and vision based self driving. You can’t compare them to Microsoft, nvidia, google as such. Completely different industry. For example, a simple human would have speech, vision, hearing, sensory capabilities all grouped together as intelligence. Companies are mastering in different versions of these capabilities.
I like how you keep specifying vision-based. Yes they are the leaders in that, I guess. That's like saying that Taco Bell are the leaders in fast food based diarrhea and parading it around like it's something to be proud of. It's honestly wild that Tesla FSD has been allowed to be deployed as-is. I honestly don't know how the people who have developed it sleep at night knowing how wildly dangerous and incapable it is.
If you’re having to ask, you already know the answer
No
Virtually every $TSLA shareholder believes it is an AI company it is not After ten years of development, their only “AI” product, FSD, is still only at Level 2 autonomy. Ten years…! And with R&D spending of only 4% of revenues, they lag far behind most tech and next-gen industrial companies.
Not even close. Despite what Elon wishes

They're a car company fundamentally. They have a small edge over other manufacturers re: self driving but others are catching up pretty quick. I wouldn't classify Tesla as an AI company at all.
