Apple recently released a new line of MacBook Pro that can be customized to crazy specs, something like a 10 core CPU and a 32 core GPU. Many of the use cases that leverage this kind of computing/graphics power are for photo and video editing. Seeing now that most of our high-performance tasks are run on the cloud, is there any point in getting higher-spec MacBook models or are we alright just getting base model? tc: 305 yoe: 4
I need the ram. Multiple editors and multiple repos. Slack. Company bloatware. 100 browser tabs.

If you do mostly workflows for AIML then no need for a power local machine. If you’re doing software development for iOS for example where you need to be able rapidly compile and test things, new mbp are very useful.

Does JP Morgan pay that high? 305K really? What role?
At faang now, not at jpmc
MacBooks are overpriced turds. You're on point running high horsepower tasks in the cloud. Your local machine is a bastardized proxy/gateway.
I think a Air is enough :) 14” inch Air will be awesome 🤩
Please give me a windows laptop better than it. Don’t compare them on the basis of gaming.
Hey, does JPMC still make you buy your own laptop to run a virtual desktop via Citrix?
Not at jpmc anymore but when I was there they supplied laptops for a little while if you had a business justification. Otherwise it was assumed you had your own computer to connect to company servers.

Engineering time is so absurdly ridiculously expensive that the correct answer is always to just buy whatever the top of the line option is. If nothing else it makes them feel better. And when you are laying people 300-800k a year them feeling a little better is always a good thing. Some companies seem to forget this
I used to think all these GPUs were an overkill, but it's actually important for web browsing and video conferencing, too. You can get a tool on a Mac to show GPU utilization, and I was pretty surprised by what I saw. So, no, it's not an overkill. I def want 32GB RAM on my next machine, too. Amazon's 16GB limit is ridiculous for productivity, even when all development is in the cloud, especially given the amount of bloatware/spyware that they install.
