Is there pip model at Apple?

Moving to Apple. Had a couple of questions regarding their management style. Would really appreciate if Blinders could help clarify. 1. Is there pip-style model at Apple? If not, how does Apple weed out under-performing employees or coasters? 2. How powerful are managers at Apple? In Qualcomm, it’s easier to say no to things or at least it is within my org. 3. How’s the wlb? If bad, how do you manage to address this? Current TC: 295k after cliff New TC: 335k

HW in apple is a top down org. In general my team is “they say jump” , you say “how high”. Unless you are a star, your manager is more important to the org. Because in general their role is to extract as much labor as they can out of you. Its a lean org, and most of the time u will work on things that move the needle, so thats an upside. WLB is. Absolute s*** . You will be surrounded by people who have work and family consume their lives. Rare to find someone with a lot of breathing room. I manage my performing hard for 5-6 months and try to ease up for a year after. Rinse and repeat. I have been here 12 + years

There are quotas for getting “expected more” but it’s less than 5 percent and it doesn’t mean PIP. But if your manager wants you managed out, can likely get the support from HR. HR in my experience does favor the manager but is also very gracious and will give the employee as much benefit of the doubt as possible. Been a manager at Apple for over 15 years. Managers have almost no power over reviews and comp but have plenty when it comes to setting their own direction and that of their employees if they are in a good org. Have heard bad things in HW and elsewhere though. WLB can be good, but don’t expect to coast at Apple. Nobody does as far as I know.

Agree with the coasting comment. Doing the bare minimum takes a lot of work, you can't afford to coast. I also find it hard to go over and beyond, I'm always playing catch up.

“Managers have almost no power over reviews and comp” Um, what??? They may have a quota limit for certain top buckets, but I think they have full discretion for organizing their reports into those buckets As for comp, it seems more freedom or flexibility than other companies, but it just has to align with performance ratings, and then they get all these extra flags to do stuff with

Lean org, WLB comes in waves: you may be grinding hard for a few weeks (or months) then maybe get a slow week (or month), repeat. Yes there is PIP but make sure you have a good manager and you should be fine.

Wlb and no one address

Yes it is, Here are the patterns that are being used. initially starts to see your behavior if manager says that you are not meeting expectations and see how you reacts, if you work hard to meet your expectations here is a catch. So you end up getting same feedback as you are giving more to manager if he says -ve feedback. Patterns that are being used: 1. No to whatever you do - Managers asks not to create any work and says no to what ever you wanted to work on 2. Erase your good work - Manager migrates all the sources code to different repository under your name to someone’s name 3. Your solutions might be right but guide you wrong to trap you to make mistakes and correct in wider audience and create proofs and project as your mistakes and your inability 4. push hard on work that needs to take a week and to deliver in 1 day. Which messes up your daily routine and end up making mistakes. 4. Hide you from people- manager make sure that your interaction is being cut from your team and outside team 5. Asks not to take any leave even you were on covid, special rules that makes you not use any benefits like remote weeks 6. What you do doesn’t matter, what manager says in every meeting is what you get in reviews 7. Watch out for hirings in team, if there is someone hired to replace you or paid low, transferring your abilities, strengths to new hire and not giving new opportunities for your growth. Make a move My advice: if you ever notice -ve feedback, validate yourself if manager is making up or are they are real and try to convince once and see if manager listens or argues or put more blame on you instead of listening. If manager operates you in blame mode. Switch the team asap or else manager will set you up document coaching or tortures till you leave as he made up his mind. End goal of the manager: pay less get more, suck all your energy in short time and kick you out. Rinse and repeat with new hires Always validate what manager says. Not all managers are like this but keep in mind if someone you notice like this and whom you work with. many factors come into picture, Budget of the team, skills needed in the team. Low pay labor availability. You may not know the reason. But once you get any queues. Time to move away from him.

I was at the big A for a few years when they were at their peak. WLB doesn't exist and the politics was toxic. Wasn't worth the money. Life is not about just making money.
