Is this era coming to an end?

I remember the past 3 years, Uber was prestigious for a while as was Lyft, there were guys posting $600k+ TC Snap offers everyday , new grads going to Stripe to make $250, AirBnB was also giving huge TC. I think even Postmates was pretty hot for a while. Now what? Where’s all the prestige and fat TC offers of these companies now? It was such a good time to be an SWE, you could easily get 3-4 offers with the amount of companies hiring aggressively. The culture is just not the same anymore. 😢

Yea so the pandemic def has a constraint on all companies. While a few are getting those high TC offers still, I’d say more than 50% of the qualified people who normally would get a larger offer + multiple offers aren’t getting them because of the past 5 months. Doesn’t matter the size of the company, everyone has been affected. “Hiring like crazy” - sure not really. I think it’s only senior + extremely talented experience that are getting offers. I am sure the people who deserved a shot and got lucky aren’t being considered. Unfortunate because in that boat. All those offers will come back once things get back to normal (whatever that is) but it will happen

It’s been so long that we forgot what normal is ☹️

I think most companies are about to hone in on automation so they can become profitable.

Every generation of new grads feel like hot shits when things are normal. That wears off in 2-3 years. Ask people who graduated around previous recessions. 2009-Feb2020 were unprecedented boom years. Those who got lucky, good for them. Irrationatility can continue longer than expected, but that doesn't mean it can't end. We'll know by next year if your TCs have a good purchasing power or not. 100k from 2000 is probably same as 400k in 2020. 800k from 2030 may be worth less than that. This will get worse since California is trying to recapture income and profits - even after you leave the state. Companies with HQ in California will get screwed by the dumb legislators who keep talking of the talent pool and 5th largest economy. California is ahead, not because of the government, but despite it.

Engineering prestige has not reduced. In fact offers are even higher than before because people need to be convinced further as they are wary to join because of the layoffs. You also get grants at the low end. Uber could easily go to 40-45 after the pandemic subsides. 1M grant could be 1.5M in a year..
