Is this situation an example of vet negligence? My dog had huge surgery to remove a spleen. The vet let me know it was fine to take him home within the next day. They released him with out figuring out what the right pain dosage was for him yet, and wanted me to experiment at home with codeine. Upon further research codeine does not interact well with certain health conditions like hypothyroidism and liver issues, both of which my dog had. My dog couldn’t take and kept throwing up from the medicine, and he ultimately had to go back to the vet and died within an hour due to blood clot. Upon further research dogs with hypothyroidism are at an increase risk of blood coagulation. The vet did not communicate that and did not proactively provide ways to mitigate blood clots (exercises and movement, compression stockings) The vet denies they did anything wrong but I believe they were negligent with providing all the information possible to mitigate risk of blood clot, especially cause my dog is at a higher risk with his health issues. I am requesting a partial refund which they are denying and now they are asking for more money for the 1 hr spent dying at their clinic. I am not going to pay that additional amount and I want to dispute a portion of their 10k bill. Is the vet negligent here? What can I do? The vet was unwilling to address my concerns with them specifically not giving him a proper dosage, as well as not communicating blood clot risks and techniques to prevent it from happening. I would have tried all to take a proactive approach to mitigate potential risk… Thank you in advance for any insight or guidance.
Sorry for your loss. Everyone blames the vet when their pet dies. Most likely, you will end up owing the bill. They performed the service and you accepted the liability when you agreed to it.
Great reply for vets to escape accountability.
Uhm no, you don't just accept liability for vet not being careful to read medical history and prescribe the right meds for the patient. Otherwise, anyone could just set up any clinic and let you sign a disclaimer. First of all, it depends if the vet knew about the medical history - did you provide notes or did the vet treat your dog for those other conditions? Did the vet explain the risks of pain meds to you given that history - if no, then I would go as far as getting a lawyer and suing them for killing your pet. But if they did mention it, and you took the risk - then that can be tricky.
Sorry for your loss. $1500 for one hour? Name and shame the idiots
Are you by chance based in Seattle?
Nope
Not a lot of murderers deserve the death penalty but it seems like it’s needed in this case
Fuck man, I'm sorry that happened. I don't have advice. Just wanted to give my condolences.
lawyer up - seriously. you're not only defending your finances but your dog's honor.
Lawsuits against vets seem so infeasible from my understanding…
Sorry for your loss OP. I have 5 pets. If something like this happened, I wouldn't be logical thinking and talking about feasibility. If it was me, I would just lawyer up because I can afford to do this and I want to burn them to the ground. That's just me. I am more vengeful person than you, possibly. Again, so sorry for your loss...
Need more detail. What information?
They didn’t provide the right pain med dosage and wanted me to experiment with codeine at home. Dog couldn’t take it, and threw up 3x. I found out codeine has a poor impact for hypothyroidism which my dog had They never communicated risk of taking my dog home within a day with out the right pain medication dosage They also didn’t let me know that dogs with hypothyroidism have a higher risk of blood clots and that there are proactive steps (massage limb movement compression socks) to help prevent blood clots from happening. Had I known I would have done everything as a preventative measure to mitigate risk. The vet just says it’s rare complication…. But they never communicated it. Had I known these things i would have kept him there longer to be monitored with other pain meds, or I would have kept massaging him to increase bloood flow..
Take a lawyer. No one can tell you on blind
Fuck the bill. Get this fuckers license taken away. I'd pay as much as I had to to ruin his life.
No idea, but I’m really sorry your dog died in a situation that could have been avoidable
I’m very sorry for your loss. I went through something similar with a foster so it wasn’t my money but I was privy to what was going on and I was the one who decided to take her to the er when she seemed off a few hours after surgery. Ultimately the agency lost because of all of the fine print and inherent risks with spay/neuter, even though they paid for a necropsy to show that the dog passed from complications directly related to the spay. It is a very invasive procedure and more dangerous than people think since it is so common in the US. I do not spay/neuter my personal pets after that.
