Is wanting to move back into a SWE role moving a step backwards in my career?

YOE: 4, TC: 130 Thinking of SWE roles at FAANG, maybe HFTs if they would want me lol. Edits: Current role: Solution Architect (still coding, but more client facing roles, white boarding, boxes and lines etc)

You should add your current role to the post. Answer will change depending on what your current role is.

Good general rule of thumb: if your TC goes up it's not a step backwards.

I think your current perspective is tainted by your experience in consulting, where roles that are more “client facing” are more highly valued than backend roles. This is not the case at fang, where software IS the product (and engineering is not just a cost center). At tech-first companies engineers are first class citizens, which is not the case in consulting. For that reason, though, it might be tough to switch from a sales engineering career to a SWE role, especially at the same level (compared to someone who honed their engineering skills over the same amt of time). But if you have really really strong chops, that shouldn’t be a problem.

This is really good insight. Thanks!
