I've never wanted a job so badly - Lyft Interview

I am a passionate cyclist/road biker and am dedicated to improving our world through community outreach of carbon neutral lifestyles. Lyft (Bikes & Scooters) reached out to me for an engineering manager position because I brand my green lifestyle everywhere (linkedIn, Insta, etc). They sold me on their initiative to reduce cars on the road, reduce emissions and improve transportation. I've never wanted a position more in my life. I want to do really well on the interview and it saddens me that my leetcode knowledge will be what ultimately determines the offer. Would anyone be able to share tips/interview advice specific to Lyft? If you could share via DM the questions you've gotten from phone screen/onsite, it would be amazing. Lyft tags on leetcode are bare. TC: 186k YOE: 7

Leetcode for an engineering manager position 😓 that's a bit of a stretch

Amazon BikeOrDie OP Jun 24, 2019

Recruiter said I'd interview for both eng manager and senior engineer? Then they'd place me where they think I'd fit best..

BYTON oh Stupid Jun 24, 2019

All the best for the interview. Not sure how good you are with coding already but a leetcode membership helps. I am aware that lyft bike division is expanding and you should most likely get the job you want.

How about Bird? I know you said Lyft is your dream, how about start ups in this space?

Amazon BikeOrDie OP Jun 24, 2019

I've applied recently but no response. Maybe I'll ping some recruiters on LinkedIn . But yes, im very interested in start ups that are taclking this space.

I was in the same boat. And then I got rejected 🙅🏻‍♂️

Amazon BikeOrDie OP Jun 24, 2019

Sorry to hear that. There's needs to be a better system that does not depend on how many interview questions one can memorize/solve. Hopefully we improve this in the future

Fact: Bikes without bike lanes make traffic worst and therefore make carbon emission worst.

Amazon BikeOrDie OP Jun 24, 2019

Agreed It's also legislative fight of every govt level. Cities re-architected for protected bike lanes would greatly improve the number of bikers, scooterist and riders.

Amazon TheStreets Jun 25, 2019

Look at Chicago. 145k $ / mi of bike lane paid by tax payers. Number of bikers in these lanes is abysmal to say the least. Every winter snow plows take out marker poles. Then factor in pot holes and road maintenance. Then changing traffic laws to protect bikers creates more traffic jams and accidents. I'm convinced it's something that can only be done in new cities or cities that aren't broke. Would be an interesting challenge to work on though!

Why not Uber

Amazon BikeOrDie OP Jun 24, 2019

I think I'll be setting up a phone screen with Uber as well. Recruiter told me only Financial Products org is available in my city.

Concentrate on the phone screen first. Go through Lyft tagged questions on leetcode. That should do it. Onsite has a laptop round, so less pure leetcode problems. However, you will need to be comfortable coding and in system design. They will dig deep.

Level at Amazon , OP ? Is this in NYC ?

You are asking us to help you cheat. I know this sounds strange coming from a Facebooker: don't ethics matter?

Amazon eztP64 Jun 25, 2019

Is it really cheating to know what question one out dozens of interviewers happened to use in the past? Is using tags on leetcode also unethical?

ION Group FNpX01 Jun 24, 2019

The only coding you’ll be doing is the laptop round. Tbh the round is more about a general way to solve the problem than leetcode. Leetcode will help you with the approach but it will not be a hard pure algorithm problem. You’ll have an engineer who you can bounce ideas from when you get the question. The question I was asked my interviewer shared that he had gotten the same question and he had basically copied the implementation from stack overflow but he had cited the source. He mentioned this before I started writing code. They do provide some code for you to read inputs etc please make sure you use them and test that part. It literally took me longer to code the part where I read the input than the actual solution to the problem. Make sure that your output is in the prescribed format as well. I was very nervous about the coding interview too but all the folks at lyft are really nice. They want you to do well and will be very supportive.

Did you get the offer?

ION Group FNpX01 Jun 25, 2019

Yes I did
