I’ve had several ex Amazon colleagues and they were all pretty mediocre. I know this a small sample size, but is this indicative of Amazon engineers? They excel at Amazon because they are decent in certain areas like operational excellence or writing useless docs while completely lacking in other areas.
Good ones usually end up in G/meta and not lyft. So not surprising that you haven’t come across good ex-banana land engineers.
Most big-tech engineers are mediocre.
I’ve never met a Lyft engineer at all
Congrats are in order
G/meta >> Amazon > Apple/Msft
Having worked at google I can say that this is not true . totally depends on team and work that you are doing . I have seen google engineers spending 6 months writing integration test cases
@cp-0, Have you seen the integration test suite that Google has? It's God awful and took me 1 month just to understand the whole crazy shebang.
im pretty mediocre compared to my peers. but i can solve problems with minimum spanning trees so
Hire this monkey right the fuck now.
every amazon interview I have attended asked some form of graph problem
Yeah, i mean just take us to the airport bud. Now, eyes on your google maps, you missed the left.
Yeah Amazon is pretty shit. I always avoid ex Amazon managers/teammates, but mostly managers.
Amazon engineers wear many hats. Imagine being a software engineer and you work 12+ hours/day, but after meetings, you can only spend 40% of your time writing code. Multiply this by 5 years. Now, THAT engineer has had a much less productive 5-years, and less time to develop their skills, than someone who didn't work at Amazon.
They are good at docs. I mean in many places good engineers are judged by how they write docs not code. Especially at staff level. This is corporate life we are talking about.

Need docs? Hire ex-amazon 😂
As ex Amazon this is the opposite of my experience. Slowed moving workplaces like google write lots of docs, meta, and Amazon imo have been more about taking action
I recently joined another company and I keep feeling the need to write more docs
