Merck Senior Scientist

Transitioning to a Senior Scientist role at Merck after a postdoc in the same company (Boston area), so 2-3 YOE post PhD. They are offering a base comp of 130-135k with 15% bonus target. RSUs of ~ 12k vested over 3 years. No sign on bonus because I'm internal. Is this a reasonable offer? Was targeting closer to 140-145k base. Anyone have any direct insights if this is the typical range at Merck?

Better than you’d get at JNJ

Reasonable.

What terms could I potentially negotiate?

If this is first offer, ask for 10/15 k more on base - they will say yes or no.. probably will come to middle.. worst case they will keep same.. Ask more on RSU .. At least upto 15k Bonus target is good

Senior Scientist in which area? I believe it would depend on the department

It's in the research track

I’ve heard that the most they can bump is 10% for internal lateral moves, not sure if this only applies to MMD division. It wouldn’t hurt to negotiate.

Seems reasonable. RSU 12k per annum or 3 years?

Merck jnm817 OP May 3, 2022

Per annum

AbbVie TeKH04 May 3, 2022

Yea, seems good to me

Just hired externally at this level in SSF, offered exactly in this range. Candidate negotiated a bit more. Bonus and RSU’s are fixed. Ask for more in base based on value - knowing how the company works already, and because no relo/signing bonus cost.

That's super helpful to know, thanks! I did get a bump on the base.
