I have a buddy at blue yonder who has 5 YOE and makes 300-400k/yr in sales. Did we pick the wrong profession? 350k TC
99% tech folks will fail in a sales position
We are too autistic for it
U make about the same as him, without the extra pressure of needing to achieve your sales KPIs. Be grateful. Sales can be gruelling.
I’m very grateful!
sorry, didnt mean to insinuate that you werent. That part came off a bit wrong - but im sure you can appreciate the sentiment re: nice not needing to chase KPIs. :)
Unless you’re wired for it, sales is brutal and will chew you up and spit you out. If you’re wired for it you do really well.
Survivorship bias
Also in sales you can make a killing one year and get fired the next.
Same could be said for SWE…
Comparison again. Compare yourself to billionaires or compare yourself to billion other people who barely living
In my experience, the people doing sales feel stuck in it. They have been doing some version of sales for a long time and without degrees or certifications for anything else. It’s not an industry I really want to be in unless it was warm leads only where I’m basically just an order taker.
Sales isn't for everyone - it can be a real grind. Then again, neither is SWE for many people on here Glad both of you are doing well.
Comparison is the thief of joy
I’m very happy with my job :) I’m happy for him too! It just makes me wonder if we should pivot 🤷♂️
