Used to be dream company of bunch of wireless folks. Now it doesn’t seem like they have roadmap and company is doing constant layoffs in haphazard manner. Stock isn’t picking up either Is Qualcomm dead? Tc: 328k
Hardware in general is tough and cyclical business
*laughs in nvda*
Data center is not the only place where hw is used :)
living.
Software and hardware companies are getting into chip production (Google, Apple, Facebook, etc). This is affecting traditional chip makers and designers.
Apple was always there. Agreed that G and F entered now, but Qualcomm still differentiated itself due to its modem and wireless portfolio in particular. Now given rise of Huawei and Apple turning to making its modem (which one day will happen for sure), I am not sure what position Qualcomm is going to serve, especially without proper growth plan.
You answered it yourself. Huawei for the foreseeable future won't be used by the west so Qualcomm still has a market. Apple will never let it's chips be used in non apple devices, and they are anyway too expensive for the vast volume of devices which need to be cheap.
I agree with OPs sentiment, let’s just say if it continues this way it’ll be the next Intel..
Qualcomm started as a revolution in modern but now a days it’s more evolution. It has slowly spread into all the expensive pieces of the phone. Like Apps Processor, WiFi/BT, Graphics, RFFE, etc. and kinda covered all the bases. Now it has its hold on Modem and Wifi but for all other areas, that is not necessarily the best. On top of that, these software companies are doing their in house chipsets for Apps processors, Graphics and now Modem. So it’s moat is shrinking. They are trying to utilize the SAM expansion by going into Auto. But that also has competitors. There is nothing other than modern that they are doing great. So, it’s going through a slow death.
Our GPU is great though
Your definition of dead is very loose. I am no advocate of qualcomm, infact i hate most of the things that are happening at Q. Qualcomm has a lot of things in kitty to breathe for a decade atleast and more. So no it's not dead. Will it grow is a real question. And there are no indications now that can happen. And its no giant like intel to just float around forever. So it will reduce to a smaller company that it is now. But will continue to breathe for forseable future.
I saw the writing on the wall 10 years ago when I interviewed with them in Sunnyvale and the only non-Indian I saw all day around campus was the HR guy. Knew right then that there was some shenanigans going on with their hiring and they were hiring serfs first and foremost.
What is serfs?
Indentured servants, almost slaves. Yes people Apple HW isn’t that much different these days tbf
It’s been run by finance folks and lost it’s way .. used to be run by engineer
Yeah, I am not a fan of Amon
Amon isn’t from finance. Homegrown engineer
in near future more and more things will have chips inside, so the chip market will grow rapidly, but looking at the ceo's plans qc will end up with a little fraction of this growing market.

Is GM gamble to ditch Apple CarPlay a good move?
Define "dead". I don't see us ceasing to exist any time soon
Growth prospects. Moat as it used to be. Not that it will go to zero.
By ‘dead’, I meant will it grow? Or will it turn into sleeping giant? Will stock get to 180-190 again?
