I've been trying to find a new job in either QA or project management since I was terminated from my job in October. Unfortunately, I have not had much luck so far and I've been doing online Java courses in an effort to transition to development (or at least a QAE role and eventually development). In the meantime, is it a good idea to get a job in, say, retail while continuing to learn and apply for jobs in my field? There's already going to be a gap on my resume, unfortunately, and I want to minimize it, but am unsure if working out of the field will affect my chances of continuing my career. Thank you for any insight.

There are better options like joining cap Gemini or sogeti as an independent consultant. You can easily score a short term gig in your area of expertise. You can also work on elance.com. show that you're hustling. Use that to your advantage during interviews
I didn't even realize these existed. You are a genius, thank you :)
