Been laid off since April. Been on the job hunt since then. As we go into Q4, I feel this job gap is hurting my chances. Anyone feeling the same way or is it all in my head? YOE: 2 Blind Tax: 0
I have tons of gaps (like years) but didn’t find it to be much of a problem. I think it’s just the market being slow nowadays
You also work for Google.
Any tips for those with long gaps? I'm at 13 months and lost about how to proceed. Had 2 interviews drop me after final round over the period. I'm a expert in a few rare niches, but feels like profile will be too ugly for the classic big techs now.
You are not alone, OP. Don't worry about the gap. Spend your time keeping your skillset sharp.
Honestly debating of doing “consulting” by starting business that’s not in my industry
Yeah, kind off feel the same way also laid off in April. Took a few month break to decompress, was getting a lot more interest then. I did freelance for a friend's business, I am thinking about adding that experience to close the gap. I think it would make sense it's the ATS doing it.
Yeah Definitely add if it aligns with the position

Gaps hurt a lot more now that we have applicant tracking systems.
Workday, Taleo, that sort of thing.
Issue is not that they track, it’s that the software can identify gaps and you don’t have an opportunity to explain them to a real person (ie your application goes further down the pile when you have a gap).
