I have been searching job boards frequently for the last 6 months and its shocking how i can’t really find any job postings where i meet most of the requirements listed. Maybe 1-2 jobs in the past 6 months but thats it. Im worried for my future, is this just me? Been working as a technical consultant/customer supper engineer roles for 10+ years (but no cs degree) but other jobs with similar titles are particular with what tech/skills they are looking for. Im 35, what should i do to help make sure i can get another job? Would going to coding bootcamp to help cover some of the skill gap help? or are bootcamps looked down upon now and totally pointless? Feeling defeated, lost and afraid. In just very unsure of my future career now, what does everyone else think? edit** i would like to switch over to product owner/product management if possible. is it impossible without years of experience?
What you're describing is the same feeling a lot of people are dealing with right now. Job market in tech is awful right now. Credit was too easy, so companies hired anyone with a pulse - people came over from other industries, foreign students stayed after college, foreign workers came over on visas, etc. Now layoffs happened, there are fewer jobs, and a lot more people fighting over them. I don't think we'll return to the "gold rush" in hiring anytime in the next few years, but I do think it's going to stabilize somewhat in 2024. I wouldn't worry about meeting every requirement in job postings. That's a wish list from the hiring manager.
i apply if i meet at least over 50% usually, but is hard to find these days…for me at least
I think employers are asking for the moon, because they need to right size the over supply of qualified talent with limited roles, it will continue like this until economy picks up again.
