Job change to EDA

I am working at Intel for 4 years, being paid like peanuts. I received an offer from Cadence as an AE. Should I consider moving ? Also, what is the TC I should seek ?

Noooo. Once you go to EDA, there are limited options after that

Apart from various tools, Cadence also has a ton of IPs n VIPs. If you are joining those groups, I won't call that EDA.

Nvidia vnnP31 May 2, 2019

Good point there, question then is whether they pay decently or not

Nvidia Mr.XoXo May 2, 2019

I'll repeat this 100s of times for the sake of human welfare. Do not go for a Eda company. You'll regret it. If you want to be paid go for Apple, Google or even Nvidia

Nvidia vnnP31 May 2, 2019

Lol, is it really that bad?

Qualcomm firev May 2, 2019

what is your skillset

Intel zipzapt OP May 2, 2019

I am a SoC back end physical design Engineer

Cadence is a great life balance company. If you go to cadence you should be super content with all that you have done over the years. Do not waste your time assuming you are to pick new skill sets and AE role pays at best 80-95k. You will have to do customer visit and other crap. Become at ATX / Techincal sales and you've got yourself commission too. Yo be a ATX you need to be a good sales person if you have that skill set cdns is a decent opportunity.

AEs are treated poorly at EDA companies... Layoffs usually happen to AEs before R&Ds

Google LdJm16 May 2, 2019

I'd say it depends on what you want to do longer term. AE is a customer-facing role, can be a stepping stone into product and other roles. I wouldn't agree that EDA is a bad choice - it all depends on what your long strategy is - you become complacent anywhere.

EDA not that bad ..average Pay but you can switch hands on technology given your bosses allow. Good to develop new skills Sales ,post sales but as mentioned by fellow blinders less option for future ..more chances for your bosses to screw you

Intel jcjz44 May 3, 2019

I honestly think that being an ae will give you such an edge. Yes you maybe limited a bit to companies that use cadence as in this case . But still experience is experience. And given the quality of engineer s I see at Intel . Trust me they need guys who have Eda experience

Look for something better. You can move to EDA whenever you like, but otherway round will not be easy. You will be working on customer issues and bring ups on a day to day basis, will travel customer to customer, and work between R&D, marketing and customer. Dont just consider the pay jump. You’ll get paid much better at other companies.
