Job in India at companies like Adobe, Amazon or Masters in US?

By perusing Masters, I risk 2-3 years of opportunity cost, but I guess in long term Masters degree will be beneficial, what are your views? I have been scrathing my head over this question from several months now. Please answer this question considering following things: 1) H1B complications (people share tons of H1B issues, like, the lottery system, RFEs when applying for transfer of company) 2) I Plan to return to India after 10 years PS: At present I am not working in a MNC. TC - 12 lacs YOE - 1.5 #faang #amazon

Without any questions, Masters. Your focus in Masters should be gaining some serious knowledge and getting a good job, rest (H1B issues) will follow

Masters don't give you any advantage ( expect as an entry into US) After your Masters you will be looking for a new grad offer and your TC will be same as someone who did only Bachelor's. The bigger question you should be asking yourself "Why US and not Germany/Netherlands/London etc"

I'll receive greater compensation and exposure in US compared to EU countries. It is true that after graduating I'll be looked up as a new graduate, but in long term having a graduate degree serves well I guess

Its a myth. In the long term work experience matters more than "Masters". Masters serve only as an entry point into US. You can check career trajectory of people on LinkedIn 10 years after grad school and you shall seek truth .

"I plan to return to India after 10 years" trust me that will just remain a plan for ever, no one goes back. If you really want to go back, trust me stay there.

This was true for the cohort that immigrated in the 90s and early 00s. I see more and more of my friends returning now, and some by choice.

I was under same boat as you . I am glad , that I didn't went for masters. If you are thinking purely in terms of financials both are same. If you get into amazon , google , Microsoft , you can go to USA under L1 visa as well so overall it will same from financial perspective.

With your current TC I’d not go for master’s in USA. When I left India my TC was way too low as a SWE and company had no intention of filing my H-1B. It took me two US masters to land a H-1B and total current TC is not too lucrative either. I’d say explore EU/China opportunities and get to US from there.

What about your friends/people from the same University? Did they also struggle to get a decent job in US?

This is. gross generalisation and gate keeping approach. Bachelor folks have made it big, it all depends on luck and working smart to get to the top. And as far as masters come, people spend half their lives paying of college debt when instead you could also work for the same amount of time and rack up that experience + earn money (depending on the industry)

Like others said masters is useless unless you want to stay in academia. It's a way to get to usa though. So think about it carefully. If you truly want to research then a PhD is more valuable. If you just want to work then masters is the way to go since it's one of the easier ways to get to usa. But then again there are h1b issues and what not. So think carefully whether you should consider us in the first place. The tc is high but the risks of not getting h1b are also high. You could use this time to bet on a different country and in the long term get better benefits. But then again if in future immigration in usa becomes easier then you might regret it. I am not for or against usa. Just putting some points here. Food for thought if you will

To add to this - The future immigration policies of US are uncertain.

If I am at your place, I will go for masters. You get fairly easy entry in US (as compared to other ways) and US is 20 years ahead of India. There are greater opportunities in US, you get global exposure and experience. Meanwhile you also make good amount of money after initial struggle. You will make really good progress in your career and money if you are good at what you do. So from career perspective it’s great.

Better path is via l1 if thats on the cards for you. Compared to MS, I would almost say go for phd as that might help with a eb1 gc down the line if you can get good publications.

I would say - go for masters only if you want to learn deep about something you are really passionate about. Don’t go for it if you want to have just another degree that makes your odds of getting selected in the H1 lottery more. As most of the other people said, it’s useless and you can earn the money and experience during the same time if you work vs you accrue college debt doing masters.
