Job market is tough. Is it even worth joining?

I was affected by Nov Layoff. I was E5 at Meta. I interviewed at 20+ companies and managed to get 1 offer recently. My offer is from SNAP with 410k TC.. my Meta TC was 370k (after stock crash). Due to recent economy and rumor of SNAP layoff I am thinking might as well take a year off and travel and then get back to industry when things gets better. I have ~1M in cash/stock savings with 2500/month dividend “passive” income. I could go to a cheap place in South America for a year and then come back. Looking for some advice?

Job is nice - but you are in a good spot to enjoy travel. I vote take the time off and enjoy a passion project or two while experiencing the world 😎. Maybe a project will take off and you’ll never go back to faang.

Time off

Interviewed at 20+ but only landed one offer? Sounds like you weren’t prepped enough, honestly. Were the interviews just generally harder than pre-layoffs?

Meta shwieplw OP Apr 3, 2023

Companies were very picky or looking for domain specific knowledge (startups).

Interviews are extremely difficult nowadays. The fact that they landed snap should show they were decently prepared What stage startups were you looking at OP?

Really depends on your family, finance situations and personal goals. Not knowing them, a general sentiment one may share is “Take the time off because once you are off there will be no time.”

Is that entire $1m invested dividend paying to get you the 2500?

Meta shwieplw OP Apr 3, 2023

Probably 100k on no dividend stock but yeah 900k on various dividend stocks (etfs and individuals). I also have a sizeable cash.
