Job moves and personal ethics

Are there people here who have strong views/ethics about something and on that account would never interview/consider a job at that company? Example - a person who thinks fast fashion manufacturing causes collosal waste of water and would never work at say old navy/Shein/Zara. Or someone who thinks nicotine is poison and should be banned and would (have) never worked for juul. I am considering my next move and wondering if I am overthinking this. I am a person of my word and it doesn't sit well with me that I disagree with a lot of things in this world but have been going with the flow due to circumstances beyond my control. TC 260

Amazon caused many retail outlets to go out of business.

It depends how much you disagree with…there are a lot of companies out there so yes it’s ok to exclude many from your interview list for whatever reason. But if you dig deep enough you can find something wrong with any company. Has seeing all the horror stories about how Amazon treats their warehouse workers made you want to move on?

I guess everyone is evil, what Evil hurts your personal ethics.

If you are thinking about joining Facebook, well only way you can answer is to join and see how you feel. Some can see a company and just focus on tech and the great product that is built, some people want to be convinced of the whole picture. To me, fb places such a conundrum. I feel edgy using their products and their privacy policies gives me creeps. But the tech they do is pretty interesting. Would I be happy joining fb? Not sure. Only way one can know is maybe try and see. But if I have a choice, I wouldn't.

100%. Stick to your vales. For a long time I thought honesty was my number one value to judge business on but I now realize "a focus on problem solving" I value higher than honesty. for example I would never work at luxotica, it helps all the leadership is insanely pretentious, but still. If you value problem solving maybe focus on a company trying to improve something and that improvement is their revenue stream.

The only way we can move towards a better world is one step at a time. The only way you can make a difference is to not work at a place which you aren't comfortable about. I hope everyone does that and pushes towards a change in the positive direction. Today we might think, they won't come for you, but they will.

I can give you the flip side. I work in healthcare, for a big company with a lot of issues that pays poorly and whose stock didn’t budge during the entire Trump administration while other tech companies were booming. I had a lot of reasons to leave, but there’s something about working at a place where you just believe in the mission, and when you do something valuable you’re making doctors’ and patients’ lives better. I would get emails from doctors and nurses saying I helped, even if it was a little bit, take the complexity out of their day and allowed them to treat patients with quality care and humanity. I never made what I thought I deserved to make until about 6 months ago, but I place a massive premium on feeling good about what I do. Hope this helps
