Job switch to Canada

Hey guys! I just got an offer from a startup in Vancouver, Canada and was wondering what a fair/liveable salary would be? It’s for a software engineer role with 2+ years of experience. Thanks!

Probably shouldn’t expect more than $85k CAD - less if they are pre-series A

What startup is it? For Van, you’re not living comfortably below 100k.

SAP Trashpand@ OP Nov 17, 2018

Hmmm but is that for people who want to move into a house? I’m assuming my rent will be around 1.6-2k including utils if I get a single bed or studio. Plus I don’t plan on getting a car. Biking will probs be my mode of transportation OR I can bring my car up from the bay Thoughts on that?

Tbh they’ll most likely offer you around 70k. Canada sucks for $$. You definitely cant survive in Vancouver for <100k. Even with 100k you’ll barely make it.

SAP Trashpand@ OP Nov 17, 2018

Damn, cause all the averages I’ve seen on glass door and payscale we’re giving me around 70-75ish. So I was expecting around 75-80 to be fair living :/

Amazon Cadabra Nov 17, 2018

Startups generally lowball there

How are other 3 millions that are making below 100k survive!?

Amazon Cadabra Nov 17, 2018

Theyve been living there since before the housing bubble happened

Amazon Cadabra Nov 17, 2018

All the new people are not surviving. They dont really get to keep anything for their savings

I will surprised no matter what Canada can offer more than 100k

Just curious, what’s a 200k bay area equivalent for Vancouver/Toronto?

Maybe $110k

Microsoft UMbR31 Nov 17, 2018

USD 110k or CAD 110k ?

Amazon Klingonk Nov 17, 2018

You will get 70-80k which is around 50k euro. There is no way you will get paid anything more in Canada or anywhere in Europe. If money is your only motivation don’t move.

SAP Trashpand@ OP Nov 17, 2018

This is actually a company I really want to work for, so I’m not trying to get like all the money in the world haha I just want enough to live comfortably in Vancouver while I work there

Amazon Klingonk Nov 17, 2018

Honestly 75k should be decent for Vancouver.Sure you can’t afford a huge place, can’t get a car etc but honestly that’s how most people live in Canada. Vancouver has great public transit so you can stay 30-40 mins away and get a cheaper place. You will also not be able to buy a house but I’m guessing that’s not your main motivation to move there. If your moving from the Bay Area or Seattle you will have a better time in terms of things to do,places to eat etc

Vancouver is notorious for low balling and expecting you to suck it up for the mountains and ocean. A startup might go as low as 50k CAD. If they are a decent startup they might have lunch but don't expect it. It's not very common in Vancouver. Outside some terrible people in senior or management positions to deal with the city is quite awesome.

I have tried finding jobs. The best one was 120k and they literally told me I was paid the highest for the role.

Microsoft UMbR31 Nov 20, 2018

120k USD or CAD?

LinkedIn ajIk02 Nov 20, 2018

CAD

LinkedIn ajIk02 Nov 20, 2018

Taxes are higher and so are other expenses higher there yet the salary is very very low
