Hi all, I recently applied for a few Fintech companies. Why do these companies have corporate title as vice president for a software engineer role. The job description doesn't really have the requirement of a VP like 10-15 years of work experience. Are these roles really for grad student and starters? Let me know your thoughts.
My friend who works at JP Morgan said VP is possible at 5 years for above average employees who start out at the bottom. Not sure how true this is, but if you’re coming out with a master plus a bunch of internship and co-op experience, I don’t see why it’s not possible. But I’m going to guess it varies from company to company. Just apply and if they think you have the proper qualifications, they’ll contact you.
Actually I was contacted by Citi for a frontend engineer position the corporate title says AVP and job title says software engineer. For a while I thought recruiter might have contacted me by mistake but they did schedule a call with the VP.
I have 5 years experience still only mid level in my career. Starting to think I might seriously suck.
Title inflation
Grad student with one year of experience is unlikely to get hired as a VP, but not impossible if you have specific, direct experience from your grad work. Maybe with machine learning. Finance goes: analyst, associate, VP, Director, MD. Most tech companies have Director, then VP I just hired a VP software eng and I read a lot of resumes. People with less than 7-8 years of experience are probably not going to have accumulated the skills required.
You will get a VP title but, everyone outside knows that and no one gives a s**t about a VP title when you are moving to another company.
True
How about senior director at union bank, is it a big role or title inflation as well?
When I worked in fintech you would see senior managers with director/VP title frequently. This is called title bloat.
Everyone is VP in Citibank :-)
So can I apply for these roles or are these like really VP level roles. I am graduate student with 1 year of work experience.
You will probably get C11 AVP or C12 VP. C13 VP might be tough.
