Jobs dilemma: Meta be TikTok
I’m a search ML engineer at TikTok and considering a job offer from Meta’s SWE Infra team. Yet to get a number but expect similar range, should I leave even with same TC? Abit concern: 1. ML algo vs Infra job scope 2. 50k Sign on bonus return if I leave before completing one year, which will be in 4 months. 3. Meta vs TikTok WLB, TikTok wlb is pretty bad but not sure Meta. Stay at TikTok. Only switch into a similar domain, ie Search Ranking, Pre-ranking, Filtering, modeling, etc. "Infra" at Meta literally means the smallest scope ever.

Still depends on which part of infra. Infra under Aparna is pretty good imo, to be even more specific, people I know under Damien are doing great work with great scope.

Search ML is better for your career long term. Taking a general infra role would steer your career towards devops.
Agree, but is devops a bad thing?
Yes, small startups do not really value infra exp and just try to offload that to you. If you enjoy writing software, getting pigeonholed into a devops role is a backwards step. I used to do search and moved towards an infra heavy role and now I’m back to ML. Knowing infra is helpful, but I’m compensated better and do more impactful work as a researcher.
