Anyone have any experience applying to jobs in a different city before they have moved. I’m moving to NYC soon so I’m applying to jobs and interested in the do’s and don’t s from what to put on your resume/cover letter/LinkedIn What to say to a recruiter etc / how to get them to take you serious. Recruiters thought?
I am not a recruiter, but one tip based on experience - when you do talk to recruiters, find a way to communicate that you are serious about moving to NYC. Things like giving a good answer to why you want to move, having multiple concurrent interviews at different companies in NYC, are signs that you are serious and not just testing the water. Question for you though: I know that Uber has a sizable engineering presence in NYC. Can't you find a team in NYC that's a good fit?
Those are some good points. I’ve considered that. I’m a non-tech currently, and exploring all the options given they might label me as a junior still when it comes to eng.
Same situation @OP Is cold-messaging recruiters of companies with NY offices okay? I have applied to dozens of companies in NYC, big and small, and literally the only one to give me a phone interview was Google. Everything else no response or email reject. I am about to go to HC with G but if that falls through I will have to beg for recommendations or something because no one else would give me a shot.
I recently did the NYC to SF application, moving soon. Applying through friends/connections is always the best bet. In other industries it’s difficult to find something before you move but we’re really lucky in engineering — you can probably get relocation expenses covered as well if you play your cards right.
Didn't like Two Sigma?
TS is great — NY is not where I wanted to live though
