Join a data science startup or not? | Remote India - Singapore Based

Hey Blind I got an offer from singapore startup with 20ppl in tech and 1 data scientist there. It is a travel company. I got option of moving to singapore or working remote from India at same pay scale. Got 7k sgd/month (no esops + 15% fixed bonus one time annual + 10% performance bonus annual) is this pay good to bank of a company from data science with 1 data scientist there. I have been in startups in past but this one is way too small in size of tech team. Work load would be great and learning would be mostlg assumping of data engineering stuff given they don't have data engineers. From remote India standpoint this salary (55L converted from sgd to inr) looks good currently my tc is 35L (esops annual value included). My experience: 4years Role: Data Scientist Current TC: 35L inr Can get at India remote singapore: 55L This startup is a travel company. So due covid getting scale of users for data science would also be slow. I want to get pros and cons from blind folks. I am confused if this is a golden opportunity, I don't want to feel regret for opportunity missed in future.

It very much depends on what you're looking for. Can't generalize, but the quality of work and the talent around you is generally better in India. But if you're looking at it as an entry into Singapore where you would spend next 5-10 years of your career optimizing for TC, then it should be a good move. The numbers you quoted mean >50L post tax TC INR(which is kind of doubling your India TC, yes - recruiters do that math) if in Singapore with a reasonable upside in the next couple of years. It might not be a golden opportunity but surely can open doors for one.

I gave already done 3 switches in last 4years. Don't think at a company like above one can stay for more than 2years. No esops is a big issue. But if I take this at India remote then yes 55L post tax of 30% would make base around 42L Singapore tax are low true

You can easily get that compensation in India also. Pay market is crazy rn. Also, joining this much small startup with no equity doesn't makes sense to me.

I have 2.8 years if experience and I think that TC of 55+ is very difficult for data scientist positions with around 3-4 YOE in India. Its usually SDEs which are paid 1.5X of data scientists and for DS roles we dont have a lot of data points to understand what YOE is being given what salary offers. I think its a good offer but if you can think of a company which can pay the same in India it can be great.

Don't - - Joining a startup with no esops / rsus is never a great idea - You're also right about scale of users for data science. But most travel companies are coming back and rebounding now. Look at their share prices and market agrees - Remote data science isn't a great idea across countries for a small scale company. You'll not be able to build relationship with stakeholders in Singapore - It'll be a back end role if you do this out of India Do it - Move if you want to come to singapore if this company allows it Good luck

Yes they allow. But I am thinking to move with a better company like shopee, grab or bytedance, etc.
