Joining FB in a few weeks as EM, having Imposter Syndrome now.

Current job: Very good WLB, mature team, everybody respect me, good connections with senior leaders. New gig: Infamous for its like-hell WLB, unknown team and leadership, have to start from scratch. Having Imposter Syndrome now, doubting whether I can be successful in a cut-throat environment, even imaging get fired after a few review cycles. Please give me some confidence, or give me some horror stories to scare me away. How difficult/easy is it for an Engineering Manager to ramp up at Facebook? Any tips on being a kick-ass EM at Facebook? How is EM's turn over rate? Edit: one more thing, I don't write code for years, does that have an impact to my success at FB?

If you can make it through EM... you are probably pretty good!! One thing I learned is to ultize the team more. Good luck. TC YoE?

Yeah I am early in my career but I have the same fear and everyday I walk into my office I fear I won’t get my daily task resolved and colleagues would think I am stupid. I just try to make sure I have good relationship with colleagues and ask them for help whenever. I don’t try to outsmart. Be nice to them and they will (hopefully) be nice to you. When I don’t know what to do I let my colleagues talk and I take notes. Then when I work hard to get a solution working and people see the positives.

How do you have imposter syndrome when you haven’t joined?

Oscar 🐨koala May 8, 2019

It’s anxiety. He got hired, he has self doubt, he’s probably worried he is not fit to do the job despite passing the interviews. “Impostor syndrome (also known as impostor phenomenon, impostorism, fraud syndrome or the impostor experience) is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts his or her accomplishments and has a persistent internalized fear of being exposed as a "fraud".[1] “

I mean if he was able to reverse a linked list in the interview he should feel super confident right?

TC and YOE? Are you a manager now? At what level you switched?

How was the em interview?

Microsoft htdfhjc OP May 8, 2019

Coding (1.5x round) is at E5 bar, system design (2x round) is at E6 bar, then the rest is leadership/management, i.e. people management, project initiatives, career development, etc.

What was the topic of coding?

Facebook public2 May 8, 2019

Relax. Once you start you will quickly learn wlb is great and the environment is not at all cut throat as a tiny minority of binders claim it to be. Congrats!

Sounds too good to be true! Thank you for the positivity. :)

Engineering manager

Please write some decent code during your bootcamp. As an EM, if you don’t know what you are doing, you’ll be asked to leave within first year :-)

Microsoft htdfhjc OP May 8, 2019

Why boot camp matters?

Amazon azmix May 8, 2019

Because everyone can see your commits :-) But it really helps with understanding dev environment, tools, infrastructure, systems, and development practices.

Just remember, it’s all to sell ads.

Amazon acef May 8, 2019

I'm in a similar boat, got E6 offer. Everyone is talking about high expectations and bad wlb. 🤔

Microsoft htdfhjc OP May 8, 2019

I don't even know how to code. :-)

Most managers dont code, unless you are managing a 2 person team
