I am joining Google soon. However, I am feeling so weird about joining a company that did layoffs less than a month ago!! It doesn't make much sense. Granted Amazon also did layoff but it was targeted at non-profit orgs and I was safe in Amazon Ads (untouched). Do you think it is usually good to join a company after layoffs? Am I making a mistake by moving now? Forget TC, I am visa holder and is it good idea for stability? Amazon L5 to Google L4. Good performer in Amazon (not top, but definitely above mid band confirmed by manager) TC - 260K New TC - 315K YOE - 5

Is it ML related ?
This is the way it will be for a while. Companies will lay off and pip to get rid of low performers and trouble makers while simultaneously hiring, although less
If you are high performer in current company, does it make sense to move?
Nope. Not for that low bump in TC if you think you’re safe in Amazon
Do you need PERM? or do you already have I-140. This will impact your ability continue your stay beyond 6 yrs. Because they can't file PERM now
I have approved I-140.
Then I think you should be fine
Ensure it’s still a valid offer before resigning. Double triple check.
How is the sentiment? And even if it is valid, is it good time to join Google?
It’s hard to tell. Who knows how many more rounds there will be. I don’t know how new people will be onboarded when there is general fear about layoffs and the stock is not doing particularly well. There are literally 0 job openings currently in my org in US. There used to be hundreds of openings pre layoff.
Everyone is afraid of a second round of layoff, there’s no guarantee it won’t happen. Overall not a great time to join.
I’d say don’t join but Amazon is worse
Worse in what case?
My team had a similar experience. We were very upset to see that many colleagues were let go and then a week later a new guy joined. Of course, it's not your fault, but it still feels s***** and I blame the high level leaders for that.
Exactly! Feels so weird.
Again, welcome to Google. I'm sure everyone will treat you very well. Ignore the noise and focus on your new job. DM me if you need any help or advice.
Which team at Google?
It's not right time to switch company. In another layoff, new joinee are mostly let it go. Stay put and switch after 6 months Google keeps offer for 1 year as far as I know
Yes exactly my thought.
Anecdotal evidence - I was at google for 7 months and got laid off.

How and when did you get an offer?
Got it in December last year. They did not rescind and they are honoring it. But still, feels super weird after they laid off 12k! Amazon is complete freeze.
You specific in anything? Like ML?
