Hey guys, I am currently a Senior Analyst at Delta Air Lines. While I do like my job, I am ultimately interested in working in the tech industry. I am proficient in SQL, Python, and Tableau and have developed a ton of industry specific knowledge during my 7 months here. That being said, I recently saw a Google position titled Partner Industry Analyst, Travel. I think I would be a good fit for the role and it aligns with my career goals, but I worry that it is too early for me to begin applying for new jobs. According to LinkedIn, I would be in the top 25% of applicants. In your opinion, is it too early to apply for new roles even if I think I’d be a good fit? Note: Happy to send my resume to anyone who is willing to provide a referral or connection Thanks everyone! YOE - 2.5 TC - $85k in atl #tech #google #analyst #travel #atlanta
Absolutely apply. You will learn from going through the process, and may even get the job.
I might need to get some practice with this recession looming over us 😂
Also I would look into Amazon air roles as well. I’m sure they would love to have people with airline industry experience.
Thank you for the heads up! I’ll definitely look into that
Apply. Also if you know SQL, Python, and Tableau you should be making 100k+. Even if you don’t get in at google there are many other companies who want that skill set. Go get what you’re worth!
Thanks! I definitely feel confident in my SQL, Tableau, and overall ability to contribute to team insights and analysis. Because I’ve not used python in about a year, I think I’ll spend some time on leetcode prior to attempting any roles with technical rounds. Fingers crossed!
Delta Airlines pays that low ????
They do have a lower than average base salary. That’s because they estimate the value of non-rev flight benefits to be around $30k. I’m definitely not unhappy with my time at Delta, but I know that it is not where I ultimately want to be :)
Sorry for necro but how many days off / pto do you have to actually fly standby?
What you got to lose?
Apply for the job. I made the transition from aviation to tech with less honed hard skills but more experience. However, you may find that FAANG will want you to have a faster paced background. Amazon is likely an easier tech entry than Google or a lower/middle tier public tech company that has brand recognition. Since my jump I have interviewed at multiple startups, Salesforce, Wayfair, Uber, Affirm, Zillow, Amazon and Meta. Final rounds at Wayfair, Affirm…offers from startups, Amazon and Zillow. Have yet to land a Google interview but have applied many times. Benefit of working at Delta is your work probably has a larger scale than most (depends on what area you are in). Good luck!
Apply, worst case scenario you still have a job and get to practice interviewing at a big tech. If you do have your listed skillset nailed down, you should def try for DS role in tech and double that TC
Thanks for the feedback! I use SQL, excel, and Tableau heavily during my day to day work, so I would consider myself advanced in those applications. I do feel good about my python skills; however, I don’t use it often for my current job and think that I would rate myself as more intermediate due to lack of practice. Definitely something that I plan on fine tuning!
