Hello. I am a senior engineer at a company I really enjoy working for, but I have realized several things about big box companies that don’t really bode well for my career growth and personality. 1. Not enough hats to wear. Hyper-specialization. 2. Pushed into management-type role from the start. IC time sinks the minute they recognized I have leadership skills. 3. Siloed. Red tape. Bureaucratic. These are just big company problems generally, nothing related to my specific employer. Apart from that, amazing albeit I’m way below market on comp. Anyway, I have two (possibly a third coming) offers from late stage startups that have been around for some time. They both sound amazing and I would love to work there. Current TC: 161k (140k base, 15% bonus) Offer floor: 210k base, 100k stock options So the money is better. What does Blind say about these concerns? 1. If the salary arms race bubble pops, startups will be more vulnerable. 2. Some have told me that you can get “stuck” in startups and this makes it harder to jump to big N later (not sure why this would be the case). 3. Am I losing something by giving up a recognizable brand name for a startup that’s considerably less recognizable? Thanks! #swe #career #engineering
What’s your YOE? The offers look impressive!
