Just finished interviewing at 6 top companies..

... and was unanimously rejected by all. Some facts:

- not that it matters apparently, but top (more like *the* top) CS school grad BS + MS with 9yoe and serious impactful projects at cutrent job that I can discuss for hours
- solved and coded fully over 90% of all coding problems and had something very solid for the remaining 10%
- at the beginning of each round, I asked every interviewer how many problems we were going to be tackling, so I know for a fact that I didn’t run out of time and miss any problems

What are some things that could have gone wrong? I’m starting to think I’m fundamentally unlikeable or have some serious blind spots regarding my communication skills and the way I am perceived.

TC: 215 YOE: 9

What a joke.

P.S. For what it’s worth I’ve been fairly successful at dating, so I’m not like a social outcast or anything.

I’m actually glad too tech companies are filtering out douchebags with no self awareness like you. Tech recruiting is not all broken.

It seems like Facebook hiring is broken then. You literally mentioned self awareness lol

If you actually read his post and don’t think he is a douche, then you are just like him.

You’ve missed the most important part. You’d rather describe the coding problems with your solution then blinders can give some insights.

You don’t need to tell the company name. But you can still tell one or two questions from 2 different companies/rounds and discuss how you solved it. Let’s see what went wrong

I have hard time understanding why so many people are judging quickly that this guy is a douche etc. He was just being transparent about himself. What I find instead is how many of engineers in Blind are jerks and easily judging people as if they know it all based on a single post which could have been interpreted in a different way. Folks, this is the problem in our interview process. The interviewers themselves don’t have any skills to evaluate others; hence, easily judge others as arrogant etc. They end up hiring fellow jerks and start complaining how many folks in their companies are tools. Problem is you (and me of course).

Engineers don’t have many friends, much in social life, hobbies or dating partners :) it is also due to the nature of tech interview process particularly software engineering. You don’t see many hardware engineers here. Recent increase of compensation and the fact that you can have it by studying gives strong motivation for people to join. It also has mostly immigrants because they lack information and find sources. This is a good platform for them (well me).

That's very correct leetllleet. I'd attended interviews to the point that I started loosing faith in myself and physical appearance. There was a time I had to start asking the interviewers for a feedback for my performance at the end of the interview. At other times, when got a rejection notice, I ask where I erred. Some are kind enough for feed backs while others are just lazy liars. At the end of the day, these feedback helped me and today, I am glad that this job needed just one interview and a Skype interview. No video, no in-person or no several interviews. I didn't do well as per my own judgement but the company accepted me and the highest pay I have ever bargained for.

  • What kind of person asks how many coding questions there will be to their interviewer at the start of the interview? It's supposed to start off with a bit of banter and resume talk.

I disagree with you Airbnb. If someone thinks it's weird than some people think it's weird.

This is work, not a controlled closed system school project. Weirdo.

If someone needed fixed parameters like that I would only hire them for lower paid non-critical work. And keep them from poisoning true professionals.

If you are white male you need to get everything 100% correct optimal solution no exceptions. Your 10% was too much in this case. You won’t get a leg up like the others...

Did you have chinese interview you a lot? I know for a fact you have to be chinese for another chinese to give you a thumbs up. Discriminatory but this is the sad reality in the valley. I have a 100% rejection rate from Chinese and 100% approval rating from white and Indians.

may be you have a bias against the chinese that makes you behave awkward on an interview or just amplifies whatever little bias they have against you.
