I'm a fullstack developer, getting into machine learning. I have a MacBook pro 2017, 8gb ram(purchased on 2018). It's getting heated for no reason and excessive sound from fan , even when I don't run any programs. i checked With warranty MacBook Air 8gb --- 1.4lakhs 16gb --- 1.8lakhs I'm not sure if I need to spend this much as my purpose of using laptop is for programming (full stack development ,machine learning) and watching videos. I don't play computer games I'm planning to go for an Linux os (Ubuntu) based laptop. Previously Dell and Lenovo used to have dos based laptops in which we can install any operating systems. But I don't find anyof those right now. I don't want to use windows Budget 1lakh Im not interested in gaming laptops. I have no reason to buy it Please recommend
Which one did you buy?
Haven't bought it yet. I checked "new Dell precision series" . It comes around 1.15lakh after customization. I checked Lenovo ThinkPad as well. As of now I'm thinking of 1920*1080 , 16gb ram, More than 3ghz cpu, core ultra 5 or i5. RGB display. Avoiding 45%NTSC display I don't need external graphics card I will update you once I buy it. Let me know if you have any suggestions
I'm pretty sure this meets all your needs and requirements: https://slimbook.com/en/hero-s It's technically a gaming laptop but it isn't the current generation so it's cheaper while still having great power. There are more budget options if you want that too but they might not be great development machines. I have the 10th Gen and it still runs great, including running multiple development VMs at once. I also upgraded the memory to 64 GB. If that is still too much, take a look at the Elemental here: https://slimbook.com/en/elemental Only the 14" i7 is in stock right now though. Post on r/linuxhardware for more suggestions too.
Thank you for responding. I have customised and ordered this https://www.lenovo.com/in/en/configurator/cto/index.html?bundleId=21MSCTO1WWIN1 Price around 83k after customization+ 5year warranty=1lakh Waiting for delivery. May be delivered by mid of may
Don't be afraid to return it if it doesn't fit your needs. Good luck!
You must buy a gaming laptop as it has a GPU. Try to get AMD processors as they tend to heat up less and consume less power. Buy one, then install Linux. Mac sucks and is overpriced shit, no reason to get it. You could be at 128 GB RAM and high af spec at that price. Though, if laptop ain't necessary you should get a desktop PC.
Thank you for valuable suggestion. So you have Any specific company/model in mind?
No, just spend some hours to look around and optimise your spending. No need to waste 1 lakh tbh, even 70k would be more than enough. You just need to have these: - A good processor which is power efficient. Zen4 U series will be good for power efficiency. Otherwise H series for more performance. Zen4 has AI accelerator in it (basically an embedded FPGA), so go with that if possible. - A GPU for ML. Nvidia if you want to do CUDA. Otherwise AMD would be nicer as it has drivers in main Linux kernel itself. - 1 TB SSD at least if you are spending much money. - No OLED screen. Yo don't want to deal with burn in. - At least 32 GB RAM. If laptop doesn't have then you might need to purchase more, or go to the store to add them if you want to save warranty. 64 or even 128 would be nice if you are spending too much money. - Different kinds of ports. Ethernet, USB, etc. and the locking port.
