Has anyone moved to Malaysia from the US? Had a chat with a friend today who moved to KL from SFO and is pretty happy there. Currently pursuing part-time PhD over there as a long-term visa hack. He spends around $5000(+-1000) monthly and lives a life of luxury. He is 36 with two kids and plans to spend a year or two figuring out what to do next. #malaysia #retire #financialfreedom #expat # #amazon #google #facebook
I watched a YouTube video today about Malaysia. KL looks really cool. I like Singapore but it’s a hard place to move to. $5k a month in KL is really really good from what I’ve heard. I might retire in that region at some point :)
The schools are terrible
How about the international private schools?
Do they have private schools?
$5k ( excluding private school ) is plenty in KL. Private schools can cost from couple hundreds to couple thousands per month. Top private schools like ISKL ( american ) or GIS ( british) are expensive and usually cater for expats and top government officials or royalty. High end condos in expats community can cost up to $4k , but can get plenty of middle tier condo around 2-3k. Food is super cheap though. Filipino helpers cost 500/months ( they usually speak English) .
I think the proximity to other countries is a big plus. You can fly to Vietnam, Bali, Thailand, obviously Singapore.
Yeah, that's a big plus. And, if you are from Asia it's a short flight back home!
I’d consider it. Very favorable cost of living, and food is good.
I have started to like Malaysia.
This is my plan. I hope to retire in Kuala Lumpur soon. English is widely spoken, it’s safer than most American cities and food is amazing. Oh and cost of living is cheap. I can live like a baller in just $3K a month. And I mean like NBA baller! Their medical system is top notch and you can get a sweet 3 bedroom penthouse with a view for $800 a month.
What's your ethnicity. Malaysia has great Chinese, Thai, Singaporean and Indian food!
I am American. Not Chinese.
KL is alright, but not my favorite city though. Not as vibrant as Bangkok, not as clean/efficient/organized as Singapore. City isn't that pretty for a SE Asian city either. I'd take it over Jakarta, but not many other cities around there.
I’ve been to all three cities multiple times and I would say KL is just as clean and efficient as Bangkok with the cherry on top that everything is in English officially. Singapore is cleaner for sure but also 3X more expensive and frankly boring. Try finding an apartment for less than $2500 a month in Singapore.
Went to Malaysia once..wouldn’t recommend it..
