Am I making a step back? (PM to Product growth)

Currently a PM (not at RYOT, that’s an old email) with 2 YOE at a company with a lot of history but not to much future maybe. Something like Oracle. I am currently interviewing at FB for a product growth analyst role. I don’t mind product but I can’t manage to get an interview opportunity for a PM position in solid company (I have 2 YOE as a PM) and I don’t know if I can/want to wait 1-2 more years at my company because of lay-off risks and not to much industry recognition anyway working there (maybe). Thinking about going to FB as product growth analyst and then switch internally as PM again maybe in 1 year or move to another company with a stronger Resume. But I am scared I am doing a step back, am I? #pm #product #productmanager #facebook #career

What responsibilities does a product growth analyst have?

RYOT kPeA25 OP Nov 10, 2020

That’s the main question I have as well. They say you are responsible to decide what to do next...but then again, it sounds more of an HR thing than a real thing. I have the feeling in the end it’s about doing data analysis so others can take decisions.

Only do it if it comes with a decent pay bump

RYOT kPeA25 OP Nov 10, 2020

Makes sense. Do you work in product at FB? I am kind of frustrated that I can’t even get an interview for product roles. Not being hired, but like an interview. Not even HR following up on an application. I am somehow shocked. Like I understand I haven’t worked at Google but also a little bit of valuable knowledge I might have. How was your experience getting a foot in the door?

I thought it was pretty easy tbh. Ever since I started using the resume template from the Product Alliance course my interview rate has shot up considerably

Just be aware that if it’s not a PM or Eng role you’ll need to do the following to get on the PM ladder. 1. Get a VP sponsor to allow you to even interview 2. Clear a full external loop, same as a external candidate 3. Be downleveled by one (including base pay reduction) 4. Retain old RSU package (which will already be about 70%+ less than PM) If possible I’d recommend finding and keeping a PM role elsewhere- but the above is still doable if you want to transfer at FB later. I decided to go for PM externally for what it’s worth

WOW, that’s great informations thanks! Product growth is within the product org they say but it might not be considered a PM role. Be downleveled by one is kind of brutal, wow.

Yep! Any role not with a “PM” or “SWE” title will go through that process. If you’re in the product org you’ll at least have a network for that VP sponsor tho!
