HBO vs Microsoft

YOE 4 HBO base 180k signon 75k 2years bonus 20% * (performance rate from 100%~145%) sde 2 tc around 270k = 180 + 180*0.2*1.35(average rate) + 40(first year signon) Microsoft Azure base 145k signon 40k bonus 0~20% stock 135k 4year lvl 62 tc around 210k~220k = 145 + 145*.1(average)+ 20 +135/4 leaning HBO but still have other interviews pending snap google, fb And for other interviews, I would probably reject the existing offers since they are giving so few time to consider. Didn’t expect they are so fast.

Why HBO over Microsoft? Never heard about them as a frontrunner in tech...not sure if its career forwarding on resume

AT&T nobody ⚽️ Mar 7, 2020

Yes, HBO now part of sinking ship AT&T

HBO Grunt_ Mar 7, 2020

No one is saying frontrunner in tech, but there are interesting technical challenges when you build your own end to end streaming platform from scratch.

@OP your math is off here. Calculating TC over the first 2 years: HBO 180k + (.2 * 180k) + (75k / 2) = 253.5k Excluding sign on: 216k MS 145k + (.2 * 145k) + (135k / 4) + (40k / 2) = 228k Excluding sign on: 208k The offers are not far apart. Tell the MS recruiter that you're equally excited about both offers, and give genuine reasons why. Then ask MS to match HBO's annual comp (excluding sign on) and increase the TC to match HBO's (including sign on) over the first 2 years. If they fail to match this, tell them you'll think about their offer. Then keep interviewing. If you get no other offers, sign whichever you prefer. NOTE: if you already previously told the MS recruiter that you prefer MS for any reason, then they are less likely to match your HBO offer.

The MSFT bonus calculation assumes the top band of the bonus (20%) whereas the HBO bonus calculation assumes the lower band (20%). MSFT could give 0% bonus but HBO will always give atleast 20. It’d be a fairer calculation to do target bonus calculation which is 10% for 62 at MSFT and 20% at HBO for whatever level OP is at. Excluding sign on TC is: 193.25 With sign on is: 213.25

Sorry for the misleading , updated a little bit detail. And really appreciate your suggestion

Microsoft thisisbill Mar 7, 2020

Are these post negotiation numbers? Show your hbo offer to msft and up that base and stock. Then join msft and grind for promos

Microsoft thisisbill Mar 7, 2020

Ps i had a 180 base as a 62 granted it was ny and im an exception but stil. Ask for 160 (also ups your bonus eligible base)

Bloomberg suzjesi829 Mar 7, 2020

@OP - don't ask for a specific number until you've done what I suggested above first. Only ask for a specific number once you are ready to sign. And at that point, tell them you'll sign immediately if they give you what you ask for. If they don't, tell them you're excited about the offer and would like more time to think about your options.

Is this HBO or HBO Max? Also if your perf rating is 145% then your bonus will be 180* 1.2 * 1.45 = 313k? How was the interview compared to Microsoft ?

Amazon Stonks📈 Mar 7, 2020

It’d be 0.2*1.45 not 1.2*1.45. Finally 180*1.29 (0.2*1.45) = 232

Amazon JnbH47 OP Mar 7, 2020

HBO max

What team in HBO? Is this Staff 2 or Staff? Good offer but the calculation is incorrect.

Amazon JnbH47 OP Mar 7, 2020

Sorry for the confusion, added more detail. It’s staff 2.
