China has been offering substantial “low-cost travel to China benefits” to woo Taiwanese voters ahead of the presidential election scheduled for January 13 next year. According to Taiwanese media, Liberty Times, about 30% of the citizens of Taipei, the capital, traveled to China by paying 10,000 to 15,000 Taiwanese dollars (approximately $333 to $500) for 5 to 8 days of tourism. Pro-China figures in Taiwan facilitated this. The reported price range does not even cover the cost of airfare and accommodation. The Liberty Times reported that China bore most of the remaining expenses for meals and sightseeing. One group recruited as tourists from Taipei is scheduled to tour Shandong Province in China for 7 to 8 days starting the 15th of this month after paying 15,000 Taiwanese dollars (about $500). Another group has booked a 5 to 6-day tour of Shandong Province around the same time for 10,000 Taiwanese dollars (about $333). Similar low-cost invitations to visit China have been extended in regions beyond Taipei in Taiwan. Investigations reveal that these invitations are spearheaded by local government officials who hold pro-China sentiments. Taiwanese voters who participated in the invitation to China reportedly met with Taiwanese policy officials and members of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC) in China. During these meetings, China emphasized the need to recognize the “One China” principle and the 1992 Consensus (an agreement between China and Taiwan in 1992 to recognize One China but keep their names). Furthermore, China reportedly enticed pro-China sentiment by stating that if a pro-China candidate is elected as the president of Taiwan, it would be easier to proceed with projects such as connecting Beijing and Taipei with a high-speed railway by 2035 and allowing Taiwanese products to enter the Eurasian market using China-Europe international freight trains. https://www.kangnamtimes.com/asia/article/61252/
