Northrop Grumman Offer

Offered a L2 Mechanical Engineering job in Palmdale/North LA area. Hoping to get feedback if I should take it or if I should worry about COL. Salary: 108k Relocation: 15k Other: 3x10 / 30 hours a week

PAX Labs lost clown Feb 24, 2023

I'm more intrigued about this official 30 hr/wk job. Is it considered full time with benefits?

Raytheon iJkN34 OP Feb 24, 2023

Considered full time - they need around the clock stuff so its Mon-Thurs shift and Fri-Sun. It's the only good perk considering the salary for LA

Lockheed Martin DenverLm Feb 24, 2023

Woah, 3 x 10? That would be amazing if counted as full time + benefits.

Northrop Grumman 53enals Feb 24, 2023

If this offer is really 3/10 for 108k salary and 15k Relo i don't know why you'd be hesitating

Northrop Grumman lvFU07 Feb 24, 2023

Have you been to Palmdale? Not a place too many people enjoy calling home. Also, still LA county and not as cheap as a similar quality city would be anywhere else. Otherwise the actual offer sounds good! Cool work happening there!

Northrop Grumman 53enals Feb 24, 2023

If this person is only working 3 days a week they could easily live in a city closer to LA and commute to Palmdale.

Northrop Grumman lvFU07 Feb 24, 2023

They had to do something to satisfy all of the work requirements there!

Northrop Grumman LeaveEm Feb 24, 2023

This makes no sense. NG doesn’t give people a full time salary for 30 hours a week

Northrop Grumman Joemama51 Feb 24, 2023

OP, is it really only 30 hours per week? Based on the pay range for the Mechanical Engineer in Palmdale, which is 77.1 - 115.7, that would put you at 1.12 comp ratio. Pretty good for the pay range. What's your current salary base at Raytheon? And how many YOE? If u ask for more from NG they might be limited since ur pretty high on that pay band already. If you have enough YOE for L3 then maybe u can ask for that. COL will be pretty high, which is why I'd say 108k isn't enough for me personally. But 3 days a week sounds nice. Those are my thoughts.

Raytheon iJkN34 OP Feb 24, 2023

Yeah I realize it is a nice situation to be in but I am concerned about COL still, I see six figure L2s everywhere even LCOL areas. I am 2 YoE and I only got 1k increase lol. But now I have a better relocation package and 10k sign-on. I agree I have working <50% the week is the huge thing going for it

Northrop Grumman geekguy123 Feb 24, 2023

Wth this should be a no brainer almost if you get full benefits too. You’re actually exceeding the L2 pay and and it’s more like a low L4 if you go by dollars paid/hour

Northrop Grumman Joemama51 Feb 24, 2023

I just looked up Mechanical Eng L2 roles at NG in Palmdale. The 3 days a week positions are Fri, Sat, and Sun. That's something to consider. That explains why they are paying a little more in that pay band.

PAX Labs lost clown Feb 24, 2023

Ah interesting. That's not bad if it doesn't cause issues with a spouse's work schedule.

Northrop Grumman BiVH16 Feb 25, 2023

Have you talked to anyone working at Palmdale? If it’s a classified program don’t go. Most toxic place to work in my experience. Also for people who say you can commute, that commute really fucking sucks. If its MRB, you may or may not like it depending on your personalities. But you will always be pressured to produce and get performance tracked

PAX Labs lost clown Feb 25, 2023

Aren't the classified programs desperate for workers? I'm surprised it's so toxic.

Northrop Grumman BiVH16 Feb 25, 2023

They are desperate for workers because they are bleeding people from toxic cultures lol

Northrop Grumman AGTAE Feb 26, 2023

I don’t understand how people don’t believe the 3/10 schedule, go on workday and look for jobs in Palmdale, lots of 3/10 jobs there. The only sucky part is HOLIDAYS. On a Normal 9/10 you get about a week of year end shutdown, on a 3/10 you really only get 1 day as a paid holiday and I think it’s either Xmas or New Year’s Day (check the holiday calendar) because you’re only working Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and I believe you’re technically required to work the rest of the weekend days as scheduled or take PTO. Most of these positions are either manufacturing engineering or liaison engineering. Having 4 days off Monday - Thursday doesn’t sound too bad, can do a lot of stuff but essentially be missing out on weekend events if you’re working the 2nd shift 3/10s.

Raytheon iJkN34 OP Feb 28, 2023

This is very true and was something I was considering regarding the offer. I ended up not taking the offer because of the social impact it has and I'd rather make less and maintain my relationships where I am at. It is hard enough to find events Mon-Thurs and make long commutes on top of that. That being said if someone doesn't care about that and wants to make a lot of money it seems there is a lot of demand to fill these positions full time + OT. Talked with hiring manager and it is possible to work more and make effectively near 150k as a level 2.

Northrop Grumman AGTAE Feb 28, 2023

Overtime when you’re already working a 3/10?
